Ente - Opinions on privacy centric Google Photos replacement

https://ente.io/ looks to be a compelling service for those seeking to degoogle, be it by moving to their SaaS or self hosting. I’m more interested in the prospect of using their SaaS for the family as a low effort solution.

From their github:

Our flagship product. 3x data replication. On device machine learning. Cross platform. Private sharing. Collaborative albums. Family plans. Easy import, easier export. Background uploads. The list goes on. And of course, all of this, while being fully end-to-end encrypted. Ente Photos is a paid service, but we offer a free trial. You can also clone this repository and choose to self host.

In theory the E2E means we don’t have to place much trust in their ability to secure their infrastructure or their attitude towards privacy if their software meets its promises.

I notice Privacy Policy helpfully lists the services they are using for storage - Hetzner, Backblaze and Scaleway.

They had a third party March 2023 security audit here that involved 2 people over 9 days

One reddit poster >2 years ago had a rather low opinion of Ente, but it’s not as compelling in 2024 when so much of Ente is Open Source and has been recently audited, still there’s some interesting points in there, particularly about Indian government mandated backdooring potential.

Thoughts? Seems a nice service.
