I know if you use feh you just have to define the display you are applying the wallpaper to.
DISPLAY=:0.1 feh --bg-scale /path/to/wallpaper
Nitrogen, has a GUI, does its job.
I'm not a very experience Linux user, I install feh, couldn't get it to work.
Then I installed nitrogen just fine, but I can't get it to apply the wallpaper. Upon further exploration, I found that the problem is "Gtk-Message: Failed to load module "canberra-gtk-module"". I don't know exactly what that is.
I also got this when updating after modifying my /etc/sources.list file.
