Dual monitors gaming(1) while movie(2)

While I'm gaming on one monitor I like to stream or watch a movie on the other.
When I'm playing guild wars 2 this isn't an issue. However, When I started using steam it was maybe one game here and there, no it seams to be every game that I run from or have bought from steam.

  • Monitor 1 "left" will show the game full screen, with no issues.
  • Monitor 2 "right" will over lay part of monitor 1's desktop over a quarter of the screen. If playing a movie "no matter if it's VLC Player or media player" the sound will play, But the video just sits there like its paused
  • Windows 7
  • 2 - EVGA 550Ti (Fermi 2GB SLI'd)
  • 2- Asus VE228H monitors
  • Display Fusion Pro v5.1.1

I've tried to Google the issue but the returns don't seem to address the issue or I'm suffering from a serious case of the dumb. Anyone have a suggestion?

Do you have each monitor plugged into separate cards? Perhaps you need to run the game in a window (which you can then snap to fullscreen by dragging to the top of your desired monitor. It could also be that because your cards are running in SLI they may be trying to dedicate more oomph to the game and can't allocate enough to the movie. What sort of settings are you running the games at and what resolution is the movie playing at? Does the movie run by itself on the second screen and then freeze only when opening a game? What about if you open the game first, alt-tab out and open the movie?

will over lay part of monitor 1's desktop over a quarter of the screen

this is because you're playing in full screen at a non-native resolution, I can't tell you if it's causing the video problem but it's worth a shot

Since the cards are SLI's both monitors are plugged into one card.

Tho I just noticed when checking over the screen resolutions. If both monitors are set to the recommended 1920x1080 everything is normal while on the desktop. But if I temporary reduced both monitors to  1680x1050, the desktops mimics the same exact issue I have when steam is running.

Just took a screen shot when I change the resolution to 1680x1050, this is what it does when steam runs. and Don't see where to change the resolution for steam games. *fadcedesk* Someone on reddit, mentioned they had the same issue, use to alt tab a few times and it would clear up. But this is been going on before and after the steam update.  And the one person seems to be out of ideas. lol

Side note, Origin games arent effected with with at all. actually shows both monitors in native resolutions, with out the overlay.

Like overlordnick said, you're running the game(s) in a resolution other than native.  And yes, it will stop video playback (while still playing the audio).  As for how to change the res on steam games, what games are you talking about?  Most will have video settings under options.  Steam shouldn't have anything to do with it.

Well I would like to disagree with that to a point, reason being is I was able to do this in the past with the second list of games. Not sure, what I have done, but the list that's giving the issue has shortened greatly. As before it was just related to just the games that I had purchased from Steam.

Games that it has this issue.

  • Grid "Steam"  ( still play this, mostly after work, when I can't dedicate a lot of time to other games)
  • Race: The WTCC Game "Steam" (rarely play this now)

Games that don't have the issue.

  • Guild Wars 2 "Hard Drive"
  • Warcraft 2 battle net "Hard Drive"
  • Alice "Hard Drive"
  • Alice returns "Origin"
  • Doom 3 "Hard Drive"
  • NASCAR 2013 "Stream"
  • Skyrim "Hard Drive"
  • Crazy Taxi "Steam" (use to have and issue)
  • Command and Conquer 3 Kanes Wrath "Origin"
  • Command and Conquer 3 Tiberium Wars "Origin"
  • Need for Speed World "Origin"
  • PainKiller Overdose "Steam" (use to have and issue)
  • Street Fighter X Tekken "Steam" (use to have and issue)
  • Neverwinter Nights "Platinum "Hard Drive"
  • Heros of might and magic II "Hard Drive"
  • Heros of might and magic III "Hard Drive"
  • Diablo "Hard Drive"
  • Diablo II "Hard Drive"

Off topic: Anyone know of a private server to play City of Heros / City of Villians. I actually miss playing that game and still don't understand why NCSoft shut it down.

Yeah I was able to do it before. Now, that I've been playing with them a little, the list is shortened, but its just odd, because none of the settings where reduced.

Heroes of Might And Magic 2, Warcraft 2, Diablo, wow that takes me back... Have you tried launching in windowed mode rather than fullscreen? Alt +Enter should switch between the two. Other than fiddling with the resolutions within your game menus I am at a loss as to how to fix the issue as I've not played Grid or Race.

To adjust the resolution, just go into the menu, hit options, go to the video tab, and if it's not right there, hit advanced options.  It's not that difficult, and it should clear up the problem.

should but guess what its not doing. lol If only Grand torismo or Forza was available for the PC, I actually wouldn't give two shits about either of them.

hahaha  yeah man, I was actually thinking about taking it all the way back to my high school days of Duke Nukem and Quest for Glory. lol I can't tell you how many hours months I spent playing that game.

I'll try alt+enter later and see what happens but I have doubts with those two.

Alright, to be clear, have you adjusted the resolution in your games to 1920x1080?  Or can you still not find the resolution settings?  You haven't said explicitly.  If you have and it's still not working correctly, then you may want to try disabling DisplayFusion and see if that helps.  If not, you can try manually editing the settings.

For Grid:

\Steam\steamapps\common\grid\system\hardware_settings_restrictions.xml

Open it in notepad or what have you and find the maxWidth= setting and change the value to 1920 if it's not already set to that.

As for Race, I wasn't able to find much on it, but I believe it has a config launcher that you could try if the in game resolution settings aren't working:

\Steam\steamapps\common\race07\config.exe

But again, Steam shouldn't have anything to do with the issue.  It's either a problem with the games themselves or a conflict elsewhere.  It's likely just a coincidence that the games you are having issues with were purchased/launched through steam.
