Dl380p proxmox pci passthrough "Operation not permitted"

Heya,
At the request of my friend I am trying this forum as the Proxmox forum has not replied to me yet and I’m trying to get this solved sooner than later. The rest is basically a copy paste from there, although links were removed

I have an hp dl380p g8 running proxmox 6.1-7
specs:
proxmox 6.1-7
cpu: 2x xeon e5 2620
ram: 94GB ecc
drives:
os: sata ssd 512gb
data: 1.2tb sas drive

I’m trying to pass through a quadro 600 (also tried 950 but same results, everything below is relating to the quadro) but I keep getting the error “Failed to set iommu for container: Operation not permitted” no matter what I try
The gpu and its audio device are in the same group but separate from everything else

I need need insecure interrupts

My gpu audio device gives this issue but even the solutions for it have not worked

I have tried using bios and uefi guests but that doesnt change anything
I even updated the bios to a recent version (2015 -> 2019) since there was a known issue
this doc shows the issue and the resolution, but the res for gpus (update the bios) did not work, i would try the one for nics but its confusing to me

Ask me for any info and i will do what i can to get it.
I’m not great with Linux so there’s a good chance i did something wrong

Note: I setup a fresh Proxmox install to mess around with, so i’m free to try anything even if it might break the install, i just want to get this working.

I’ve not had experience with this setup or issue but my first thought was did you run update-grub after updating the GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT value? Easy to forget…

Could you post your IOMMU groups? Try running the following on your Proxmox host (I think I originally got this snippet from an @wendell post or tutorial at some point):

I think RMRR errors tend to point to bad signs for IOMMU support on the motherboard. I’m no expert but take a look at this paper on RMRR exclusion to see if there is any information that sparks some ideas for you to try.

Yep i definitely did update-grub+rebooted after making the modifications.

Hmmm…looks like good IOMMU separation but I assume this is with the ACS override applied.

A few more thoughts:

  1. Are you sure you need the pcie_acs_override? Have you tried just using the VFIO for the PCI ids? Try removing pcie_acs_override that and see what your IOMMU groups look like.

  2. If you don’t need the audio on the GPU you could try not passing it through or binding it to VFIO and only pass the graphics device.

  3. Are you blacklisting the NVIDIA and Nouveau drivers? This from my Proxmox 6.2-6 system:

  1. I’m pretty sure I do NOT need pcie_acs_override, but I was out of options and added it anyways. Removing it doesn’t change the groups at all (at least, not with the gpus where it matters, haven’t looked at anything else)

  2. This is the intended end goal, but I read that since they’re both part of the iommu group I have to pass both, as iommu is an all or nothing type thing. I have tried without the audio but i get the same error irc, either way it doesn’t work currently.

  3. I should be, did the instructions on the proxmox guide:

Upon reading the whitepaper, its only suggestion was to contact hpe. Obviously with this being a 2nd hand 8th gen server I do not have warranty/ support so I have no idea what kind of support they would give me (I’m assuming nothing), and I would rather avoid needing to pay for support.

yep thats the “known issue” i spoke about. i already updated the bios to the latest i could without paying (2019) but the other instructions are too confusing for me. i tried but failed with proxmox and know nothing about fedora or red hat

I GOT IT WORKING. that guide was the fix, i just had to have someone help me out with it (note, use opensuse 15 there is an hp-scripting-tool package for it, and the hp-health package for suse 12 DOES WORK)

HI, i buy 2 server HP Proliant DL380p G8, and i cant passtrought problemns ‘‘operation not permited’’ on proxmox and Unraid can you please help me whit the guid hp the steps how you fix this problem?

what steps did you have to go through? I’ve updated my BIOS but I don’t think that fixed it…

Took me quite a while to hunt down all the details. ESXi works great on these servers, they were built to run it, and have the pass through and sr-iov built in to the OS. Other OS’s require a little more effort. After some time I found this.

This will install the scripts you need to run ‘conrep’ and modify the bios to exclude a pcie slot.

I have had issues passing hba cards using this method but have not tried using a gpu/video.

Hello,
my graphics card does not show up it’s Physical Slot in lspci -vv, instead it shows up PCI-bridge PLX Technology PEX 8747.
Do I use scripting tools to exclude this PCI bridge, or is there any other trick to get physical slot show up at the GPU?
