Does anyone know of a displayport to dual link dvi (or hdmi 1.4) adapter that support 1440p other then the hp at 180$ techbuy HP DisplayPort to Dual Link DVI Adapter
i would look to ebay. although those are not that reliable. and you may need to figure out if you need an active display port adapter or a passive one (usually active)
From what I've just read, anything above 1200p requires an active adapter.

Is there any reason why some brands for Dual-Link DVI are so much more expensive?
I was recently looking for a Mini Displayport to Dual-Link DVI adapter and for that at least one could justify that Mini Displayport connectors are rather rare.
Is there any justification for a plain Displayport connector to be in excess of $100?
Yes you do need the expensive active adapter. This is voodoo I know, but my dad has the Apple adapter and it works great going from mini dp to 2650x1080. Was around 100 bucks at Frys.
visiontek has these on ebay for $35 works great except with macs because they dont provide dp power. powered adapters are $100
is the Displayport out on Macs unpowered, or just the Mini Displayport?
