Discourse OneBox Showing Wrong Description/Preview

The onebox on this post is showing a description and favicon for a paywalled page on Financial Times, yet the domain shown is arstechnica.com; the onebox does in fact link to ArsTechnica.

It’s actually showing correct by what the website provides.

Take a look at the page source and you’ll find this:

  <link rel="canonical" href="https://www.ft.com/content/175e5314-a7f7-4741-a786-273219f433a1" />

So the FT article is the canonical URL of the Ars Technica one. Why? Who knows, that’s on Ars to figure out (propably because it was written by and for FT though).

But either way Discourse uses the canonical URL to display its boxes.

Sure enough, the footer cites Financial Times. I did not consider that Discourse would follow the canonical URL like this, as if it were a redirect.

Good and interesting to know.
