Deciding between Ubiquiti EdgeSwitch 10G 16-XG vs NETGEAR ProSAFE 16-Port 10-Gigabit Ethernet Smart Managed Switch (XS716T-100NES)

HI all,

Would appreciate your help in understanding what makes

Out of curiosity, how many machiens on your network require 10G connection?

I suppose the most costly one above can handle multiple concurrent clients?

For the time being

  • Primary FreeNAS box
  • ThreadRipper KVM Server (or XenServer, if I get that working)
  • ThreadRipper Desktop
  • 6850K productivity rig
  • Lab PC (downstairs).

At least the first 3x will be over SFP for that IOPS goodness over ISCSI.

10G over fiber / SFP+ is cheaper than 10G over copper, because it requires lower power to drive a laser signalling through fiber than it does to drive the circuitry and enough signal through copper. Also, 10G over fiber has seen a lot more use over the years and there used to be a lot more development on fiber equipment for 10G

This is a 16port SFP+ switch for $400 for example: https://mikrotik.com/product/crs317_1g_16s_rm

You can maybe find used older 10Gbps SFP+ switches even cheaper on eBay, but those probably have active cooling.

Theoretically, there exist SFP+ RJ45 10GBaseT transceivers that allow you to connect to an SFP+ switch with copper, but those have limited distance because of not enough power (hp makes 30m ones).

Right, that makes a WHOLE lot more sense!! Cheers
