Ddr4 speed question

what will happen if i install ddr4 3600 on a motherboard that only takes up to ddr4 3400mhz?? motherboard is a b450 tomahawk, cpu is a ryzen 5 3600

The ram would downclock itself to what the cpu supports.

its not the memory controller on the cpu im woried about, its the max memory speed on the tomahawk board which is 3400mhz. so will the ram downclock to 3400mhz?

There’s two parts to the board support: the board traces between the CPU and the RAM, and the BIOS support.

If the board says it only takes up to 3400 MHz RAM that means one of two things: they only tested it up to that speed and they don’t know if it works at faster speed, or they tested 3600 MHz and it definitely does not work.

If the board BIOS allows setting higher RAM speeds then give it a try. It might work. It might not.
