The Verge literally has the most useless article on this, on the whole internet.
NYtimes, has a better writeup on this. However there doesn't seem to be a reason why it fell yet, despite the robot being programmed to avoid stairs.

Yeah it's demographic profiling software malfunctioned and realizing most people in the area were Christian he decided to "Impress the humans"
