DAS with a Mac Mini for NAS + Living Room PC

Hey Hey

First post here, please forgive me if I did anything wrong.

I am considering to build my own backup/NAS at home, but I was wondering what options there are if you wanna run something like a DAS + Mini PC connected via TB/Fast Enough USB

Specifically I was thinking the new mac mini since its value proposition for a mini PC, combined with the insanely low power draw is quite good. Mainly thinking of plopping the mini in the living room with the DAS, so i can use the mac mini on the tv as a normal pc, but also benefit from a NAS i can access in my LAN and outside of course.

I do use apple eco system besides a main windows gaming system, so I do know how to use it (at least i think so, personally)

Is there things to wary of? Is it even something that makes sense? Welcome to start a discussion and to figure out things. Relatively new to the idea of getting my own “cloud” storage.

Thanks!!

this is what ive retired my m1 mac mini to has a terramaster thunderbolt das and a m.2 dock from aliexpress. k400 from logitech is a must if this is a living room machine

all the m minis are great for this for low power

I assume you are running RAID? Any kind of special software? Had any issues?

The Mac Mini with M-series chip makes a solid combo for a home storage setup. It’s efficient, powerful, and can work as both a media PC and file server - perfect for keeping in the living room. Since you’re already in the Apple ecosystem, handling backups and sharing files would be pretty straightforward.

Keep in mind that using macOS for your NAS means more manual setup compared to ready-made solutions like Synology or QNAP. You’ll have to figure out drive management, backups, and remote access security yourself. It’s basically choosing between the Mac Mini’s flexibility and the specialized features you’d get with a dedicated NAS.

The Mac Mini + DAS setup could be a smart way to get the most bang for your buck.
