Current state of streaming game locally to the living room?

My use case:

I have a good gaming rig in my bedroom. I would like to be able to stream games from my bedroom PC to my living room, so I could do some awesome Linux-y couch co-op from the games on my bedroom PC.

So, research time!

I have looked around a bit, found Gaming Anywhere which seems like an abandoned project, and some mutterings about Valve eventually doing a streaming service.

Hardware wise, I could probably buy an oDroid C2 which is capable of streaming 4k video @ 60Hz, costs $50 and hook that up to the TV along with a Bluetooth receiver and some wireless controls.

But, is this really all there is on Linux, or is there a layer I’m missing here?

You may be able to install Steam for linux on that oDroid, that would work. But I would suggest just buying a Steam Link and using that. They’ve been as cheap as like twenty bucks on sales in the past.

If you can install Steam on it, Steam in home streaming has come a long way (just make sure you are on ethernet and not wifi!)

but I second the Steam Link. My roommate got one and it was stupid easy to set up. Streams from WIndows and Linux PCs

For the record streaming games over wifi is okay as long as both devices use AC. You won’t do any twitch shooters, but games like civ or lego games are fine.

True, wifi was fast enough but I had stability issues for some reason. I never really troubleshooted anything. Just ran an ethernet cable across my house problem solved

Yeah, steam link on gigabit networking is great! I use it every now and then and I really don’t notice a difference in casual games. For

Bandwidth isn’t normally the concern it’s retransmit incidences and latency that’s the big concern on wireless.

Yeah, you will definitely want 5Ghz wifi to do it, so your neighbor microwaving a burrito doesn’t force your router to retransmit packets.
