A project called “MIPS Open” will allow companies to design MIPS cpus. I guess this could allow top notch n64 emulation. Is this a solid guess or is there too much work involved, or would it help slightly?
Side note: start browsing page 10 back to page 1 of Linux.com’s “Hardware” category!
As far as I know, CPUs are (relatively) simple to emulate. Most of the instructions and their effects are documented pretty well for the developer’s sake. I think it’s mainly the graphics hardware that’s the main problem.
Unless SGI opens up their old graphics chips I doubt N64 emulation will improve too much.
Nice to see some competition in the open hardware CPU space though!
