Compatibility of Crucial MTA18ASF4G72AZ-3G2B1 ECC Ram

Hi All,

I am thinking about upgrading the memory of my workstation using MTA18ASF4G72AZ-3G2B1 (ECC UDIMM) by Micron, thinking about getting 8 of them, 32gb each.

My CPU is an AMD Threadripper 3970x and mobo is Gigabyte TRX40 Designare Rev1.0

just want to check if the ECC ram will be compatible with my current CPU and mobo?

I have done some searching on google, some said it is compatible, but the Micron official website said it is not compatible. ( but the 16gb version is compatible though which is a bit strange).

Thanks!

Gigabyte has an official memory support list: https://download.gigabyte.com/FileList/Memory/mb_memory_trx40-designare_200304.pdf?v=173e320bad9d346b6814eed857641fb9

anything on there will definitely work

A lot of boards in the 3000 series timeframe didn’t test any 32G DDR4 modules - they were (are) uncommon. That the QVL has some 32G modules is more than some manufacturers did. That doesn’t mean micron ones will work of course (they should meet the jedec spec same as the others, that is the point), but neither the store nor gigabyte are likely to guarantee them (maybe a problem, depending on your local consumer laws, or lack thereof).

You could however experiment with an initial 2 modules (or 4, whatever channels suits your minimum you want to test). This is an experiment I have on ship with these modules, same gen (ryzen), but different chipset so a positive result isn’t really an answer either.

I’d check through the manual however, see what it says the maximum supported RAM is (in 32GB modules of any vendor).

Thanks. I have checked the list before but the module was not on there. I believe the list was a bit outdated. I have also checked Micron’s website, it is strange that the same memory but a different size (16gb) was said to be compatible with my motherboard, while the 32gb modules were not compatible.

Thanks so much. Yes I checked Micron’s website, I think your answer explained why it listed their 16gb module to be compatible with my mobo, where the 32gb being incompatible, they were basically the same ram…

I already had 32gb module ram running on my system, they are not ecc ram though. Can I assume my system will be compatible with these 32gb ECC ram modules too?

just keep in mind that running two DIMMs per channel most likely results in lower frequencies. The dual rank DIMMs in particular (all 32GB). And TR 3000 doesn’t support RDIMMs, so I’d double check if you can run the system with full 256GB at all or how much clock speed has to be sacrificed to do so.

I’ve used Micron DDR4-3200 32 GB ECC UDIMMs on many AM4 ASRock, ASUS and Gigabyte motherboards and have never had an issue getting 128 GB DDR4-3200 to work. TR 3000 should behave similarly here.

Note that ECC UDIMMs generally only have a standard JEDEC profile, if you like to operate them with different timings or frequencies this must be done completely manually.

I haven’t been much of a gamer for a few years so I never had the passion to do memory experiments that take more than 5 minutes.

Thanks so much for the info!

Thanks so much, that is good tips.
