Color laser that supports 9" printing (for tabs)?

I’m doing some initial research for my wife. For her work, she needs to occasionally do decent size print jobs (5-10 binders that run 150-300 pages double sided on average, occasionally higher). Usually once or twice a month.

They’re considering purchasing a printer for her to do this at home (she works entirely remotely). She needs to be able to print on tabs, which I believe requires 9” width, via either 9” pass through or a multi function tray that supports those widths. Obviously an 11x17 would work, but prices jump up around $1800-2k for those.

Does anyone know of any that would support this? Almost all printers I’ve looked at, specify 8.5” for passthrough, but some indicate they can do Avery tabs….which I’m unclear if it’s just incorrect or apirational?

I’m sure her employer will ultimately reach out to a vendor for this, but she has the ability to sway their decision if we can find any candidates that she would prefer.

I have a cheap Brother laser which nominally supports A4/Letter size paper. The single-page feeder’s guide pieces can be pulled sufficiently apart that a 9 inch wide piece of paper should fit, so there is only a question of whether specifying a sufficiently large document size makes the printer extend the print area accordingly. I haven’t tested that but I suppose I could give it a try after work, and report the result.

A4 should be 8 1/4 x 11 3/4, so while the paper tabs may go to 9” wide you wont be able to print out to a 9” width by selecting A4.

To get 9” wide you either need a size B4 or Arch A printer. You may find an Arch A under a “large format” printer section, it is 9x12.

Another option would be to print on labels and just put the labels on the folder tabs.

I didn’t say that, did I?

Emphasis added.

I double-checked this morning, and found that the maximum width for the manual feed plastic brackets is actually 8½ inches. While you could go around that trying to feed wider paper into it, it is possible that the drum/fuser unit is not wide enough to accommodate it. Helaas, pindakaas (as they say where I live), it seems that you will actually have to buy a larger-format printer. I recommend trying your local second-hand marketplace for slightly-used company overstock, that should drop the price significantly.
