ya will go at the library again to see about printing in clear blue if they now have it. But also thinking of just using the original sell, and maybe glue the mid plate instead of screwing it with the misaligned holes.
イストワール (Histoire): a NAS project
So I touched upon in a previous post how while being in Japan, I began to be worried about my data. In part because of the US, in part because I begin to have a storage problem. My 256GB phone is full, and trying to upgrade to a new phone with 512GB storage is complicated without selling a kidney. And the fact I had to increase my One Drive subscription, I now don’t want to give any more money to Google.
So here come Histoire! Again a character from Neptunia, tasked with keeping records of the world. A fitting name for a NAS.
The goal is to out Unraid on it (or maybe TrueNAS, didn’t fully decided yet) to use Immich on it, and probably an open source alternative to Onedrive. Up to now, it’s my first foray in server rack, so this project is all being made as cheaply as possible.
But I need a finished physical thing before toying with software, so building the NAS rack first. I’m going with a 10" rack model because it’s cute and small. With the current pricing of AI, that means snitching 4 used 500GB HDD. Gonna put them in RaidZ2 to have about 800GB of usable data.
The rack itself, I made it with scraps 2x6 and 2x4 from the house we are building for my brother. It’s cheap, and quite sturdy.
This logic of cheap build continue by using that unused PC I used previously in the xbox project.
And for the racks, I’m 3D printing them. Up to now, the NAS rack, the HDPlex rack, and two HDDs rack. I’m using the following models for the project:
- 2U mini ITX motherboard 10"rack panel with PCIe
- 1U Shelf For HDPLEX 250W GaN Passive AIO ATX Power Supply For 10" Rack
- deep version 1U 10-inch rack hard drive enclosure
I like how it’s going, looks well made, but I need to print some more plates, and then will begin to connect everything.
Took some time but here we are.
Received sata couplers so I could make my hdds hot swap
And finally was able to get last pieces printed, so with all that the server was fully assembled with a power bar on the side. Put a GTX 1050 I had on hand without its bracket to use it for video acceleration with Immich
And with all that the server is residing under the stairs and Unraid is alive with immich on it!
Took longer than expected despite me using a guide. I’m not really accustomed to any NAS software lol. But officially downloaded all my Google Photos files, and ingested them in Immich. But now my storage is full because the process of downloading, unzipping and ingesting kind of double the space the pictures should take. Need to figure how to cleanly do that clean up. Also I need to figure out the remote access to it.
