So I’m picking up a pair of EPYC 7551s and I’m looking for a chassis, motherboard, PSU, and cooler. So my main requirements are for it to be cheap (preferably under or around the 1k mark) and as quiet as humanly possible without like custom loops. Other requirements is that I would like to have two PSU or at least one with the ability to add a second one in the future if money makes this an issue, have a decent amount of space for hdd bays as I will be using this as a temporary nas via a VM. That’s about it. I know these are tough requirements.
When it comes to chassis, you could find your luck in the good old supermicro designs.
Go for standard PCIe slot disposition, EEATX compatibility, the SQ variant PSUs are audible but acceptable (and can be had for less than 60bucks a piece second hand), the case fans can be replaced for more bearable ones/ more optimized for lower RPM, you get a fair amount of front hotswap 3.5" bays, some backplanes can act as basically just sata3 passthroughs in essence, available in 2U, 3U and 4U, and can be had for cheaper than random whitebadged chassis that wouldn’t come with a PSU, and would only take consumer ones.
The rails aren’t too pricy, and you can even find a cable management arm in stock for them! Not too hard to have a full kit. You might just need an adapted for the front panel (supermicro connector), and you might (or not) use the PMBus connector, it’s not “required”.
