Captive Portal\pfSense\Permanent Access

Hello Everyone.

I have been designing a home networking project for a while now (mostly in my head). Before I begin compiling an inventory of parts and putting pen to paper, I have some questions which remain unanswered.

One of the nagging scenarios I have, which I seem to be unable to answer by digging through documentation, is the following.

Suppose I was using pfSense as my router and a decent WAP. I would like to setup Captive Portal on the pfSense device and configure it to redirect users to a page where they accept terms. Once they agree, I am notified via text or email that a guest is requesting access. After I approve, they are connected to the network and never need to go through the process again so long as they use the same wireless device.

Thanks in advance for your input.

So you mean this?

I was looking at that, but couldn’t seem to find where I could grant someone permanent access. It appears a month is the limit but was looking for input here.

I believe if you use the MAC authentication then it never times out. The only issue with that is I believe iPhones will randomly change their MAC address.

It appears that iPhones generate a different MAC address per network they connect to, but keep the same address so long as they do not forget the network.
