Can't recover bricked 5700xt

So my buddy was updating the bios on his 5700xt he thought he had the correct bios and of course it was the wrong one. So he bricked it. I was able to jump the vbios chip 1-8 and get it recognized by my test bed. I tried every version of amdvbflash i could find and the 3.04PLUS is the only one that gave me card information.
but when I run the flash I get “Failed to read ROM”. error flashing
As you can see I tried shorting the amdvbflash to just flash for dos. I am running CMD as an administrator. I also tried in power shell but got the same results. I’m not sure what I can do to bring this card back to life. It is an Asrock 5700xt challenger. I downloaded the bios from here VGA Bios Collection: ASRock RX 5700 XT 8 GB | TechPowerUp.
Do you guys have any ideas or does he had a very expensive paper weight?

This could usually mean that the ROM is read/write protected. Or it could also mean that the ROM is corrupted to the extent of not being recognizeable.

If so, it may be harder to get it to work. U can try different terminal commands, for example trying to force the update through. With the force command -label for the flasher (if there is one, there should be, otherwise try to find another version. It’s still based upon AMD own AtiFlash / Winflash so shouldn’t be a problem)

By forcing the ROM update through to the card, the flasher won’t need to be able to read the ROM first, instead it’ll just overwrite anything on the ROM (firmware)

Or u could try to remove possible restrictions placed by the other vbios ROM perhaps…

Unfortunately with 3.04+ they got rid of this command
-f : Force flashing regardless of security checkings (e.g. AsicID & BIOS file info check OR boot-up card).

This is a list of available options for the windows version in 3.04+

options.txt (6.2 KB)

I’m tempted to install linux on my test bench just to try that version.

I wish I could switch to Linux fully and get rid of Windows so far in testing I’m not really liking win 11 at all. Reminds me of apple and I cant stand there stuff. Some of my programs that are windows only programs I cant seam to get to run in Linux no matter which Wine I use. I found WindowsFX and I’ve been testing it in a VM seeing how it runs and if the programs I use that are windows only will run properly in it.

get yourself a CH341A and Clips and flash it manually from the outside.
Never hassle with any weird Flashtools again.

I use flashrom on linux …
The windows software might be a bit weird but at least consistent.

If my soddering skills were better i’d probably try that. I need to try again tomorrow. fingures crossed it works on windows or linux otherwise ill tell my buddy he now has a $700 paper weight

with a clip, you don’t need to remove the chip.
If you have a shit clip like i do, removing the chip might be less annoying.

With a good clip, you will not have issues.
The default clip should be nice, i bought the shit one separately.
so, get one ?

If it really results in a paperweight, there are people who specialize in fixing gpu paperweights.
Not many, but there are.

The linux utility for amd flashing is way more up to date and works a lot better on the 5000 cards. Otherwise the chip flasher is the way to go.

Good to know I didn’t realize the Linux one was more updated.

I’m a fan of Ubuntu so I just wanted to check to see if you know if the program will work with that flavor of Linux

most of the guides recomend ubuntu, or arch. last time i used it, it was on debian.

Unlucky that bricked, i did a lot of bios swaps in a bunch of rx580 and i would normally just boot with APU and flash back to the right one.

Also you can open it read the memory vendor and just flash something on it even if is not the exact one and they normally post.

If ATI flash is not working you can even try to use a older version, i legit don’t think is bricked bricked

I finally got it to work. I reinstalled widows in UEFI mode instead of legacy mode. I made sure I didn’t plug it into my network so nothing would update. After I got it booted up fully I shut down the system and shorted the pins again. Once I started up I used amdvbflash 2.93plus in dos admin and everything read properly. And all the information showed up this time. I flashed a bios I found on tech powerup and it installed properly with -f -p. I was able to see it in windows after reboot and I was able to load the AMD drivers and it worked perfectly fine. My bud was surprised to the point that he came and grabbed it to throw in his machine. I told him no more flashing things without me. lol
