It often, but not predictably o r with any reason that I’ve found clicks. It’s not arcing, there’s no ozone smell, there’s no melted plastic smell and there’s no smoke or charring anywhere.
I’m not actually sure it’s the PSU because it’s so random. I’ve read that it could be the AIO too, if there’s air in the pump, but I don’t think that’s it.
I have no idea how to test for this, though.
It seems to mostly happen during LM Studio use, but like I said: that isn’t for certain.
If light load is light enough it can be the burst mode relay. Not something that’s usually intended to be audible, but happens sometimes even in supplies with good design and quality control.
FWIW the air in pump situations I’ve heard sound like, well, air in a pump. Not something I’d describe as clicking. Maybe if it was a bubble getting picked up from time to time but that shouldn’t be an issue in a correct AIO install either.
Which GPU are you using? Is it doing in other workloads too?
In my experience an AIO purging an air bubble sounds almost like a distant rattle of some kind and if you put your ear to it you can hear the liquid flowing too. So I’d rule that out aswell.
I’ve done what I could for the AIO, suggestions I"ve seen online: gently rocking the case (slowly) on different axises to dislodge any air bubbles. Setting the AIO speed to 100% for a period of time. Both were done, and sound happens.
It just happened after LM Studio inferencing (when it generates text reply), when the GPU fans had wound down, immediately after their wind down. It’s a 5090.
Once, anywhere from 2-8ish seconds after inferencing stops. Then sporadically, maybe but not necessarily anywhere from 10 to 40 seconds (but never click - 10s - click -10s - click 10s) for about 1-2 minutes after inferencing stops. It’s random.
I think I’ve figured it out. It’s thermal expansion and contraction. GPU-burn does not cause any kind of noise, setting the GPU fans to 70% for a minute+ does not cause any noise - so a bearing being pitted or something else is ruled out - it’s only inferencing. Inferencing is relatively easy on the brain of the card but is incredibly difficult on the memory. I can’t think of anything else, nothing else causes it, that’s the only time I hear it, the only thing that I’m able to do that necessarily triggers it.
I’ll do a bit more testing tomorrow, but so far I’m pretty sure it’s thermal expansion via the VRAM.
Well, this is rather frustrating.
The click happened and I haven’t done anything with LM Studio for 12 hours.I guess it’s back to the <no clue what’s happening>.
