Buy ARMA 2 or wait for DayZ Standalone?

I don't know anything about DayZ standalone, so if you care to brief me that would be appreciated. I'm trying to decide if standalone is worth holding out and not playing DayZ for. What is the planned release date for standalone? Also my motherboard died so it'll be three or four weeks until I get a replacement from Asus, so take that into consideration as well. I'm very interested in DayZ after watching several YouTube series of it so I know I'll like the game. I'm only 16 though and I have no income so I'm just concerned about where to spend my money. Thanks for reading!

The planned release date for DayZ was by the end of the year but this has now been pushed back beacuase the lead developer Rocket doesn't feel it's ready for release just yet (there are some other things like two people being locked up in Greece - http://www.helpivanmartin.org/). This is a good thing, better they release something that he and the community will be happy with than to release something so full of bugs people will complain about having paid money for it. You can read more about where things are at here: http://dayzdev.tumblr.com/post/36771692833/dev-report-november-2012 but it's not updated very often.

I heard that they released a new update to DayZ mod that will change lots of things and that they'll keep updating it for a while yet. http://dayzmod.com/?News

I'm in the same boat as you - I really want to play and was waiting for the standalone and now that it has been pushed back I'm wondering if I should buy ARMAII now in the steam sales. I think I'll keep waiting as most people will hopefully move over to the standalone when it come out. Hopefully it'll come out early (Jan) next year - but I really don't know. I'm waiting unless they offer ARMAII at a crazy price at the end of the sales.

Sounds like a good idea, I probably won't have my PC back yet by the time sales are over though.

Then wait for the standalone anyway. They were aiming for end of the year, so hopefully it'll be released within a month or two tops... but we'll see.

BTW ARMAII is 50% off atm... it's a nice deal but I personally am still waiting, perhaps it'll be 60% or 75% off on the last day - or I can wait until the standalone. ARMA3 might come out next year too...

If the only reason you want Arma is for DayZ then wait for the standalone package...

It is going to be an entirely different model and created specifically for DayZ. Meaning max stability and whatnot.
