Building my first NAS - help with MB, CPU, may be PSU

questions answered from General Guidelines - Build a PC section

Budget: I would prefer future value instead of immediate savings, so if something will be more expensive now, but will pay off in terms of quality, survivability or there is any other reason to add more € I have no problem
Location:Middle Europe - CZK/Euro
Preferred retailer: no preferred retailer
What I already have: I have Case - Sagitarrius, one HDD WD Red 12 TB
What am I building: I want to build NAS
No overclocking, rather undervolting may be? (no experience in both)
no water cooling
So far I am inclined to use TrueNAS, but I will see, I am playing with it in VM and trying to understand the software side, I read about Proxmox and having that as OS and running TrueNAS (TN) from there, read about UnRaid as much more friendly compared to TN however TN can do ZFS which is good way to do raids? sorry lost in this a bit currently….

Known limitations:
CPU cooler max total height 55 mm

Motherboard format mATX, ITX

pcpartpicker doesn`t have 14100T just 14100 or 14100F so I decided not to use it.

My comment:

My aim is to have so far 2 x 12 TB HDDs in RAID1 (not sure about file system, ZFS is what I read best as it can protects against bitrot?)

I am not sure what would be the best choice. I got asked when I tried some discord help, what I want to use it for and when I mentioned proxmox, rust (I am thinking about doing that but not sure if its good idea to run that on NAS dedicated machine for safety reasons) I basically got answer that I need to make up my mind before I start to pick up hw. So my main aim is machine which would store my data in RAID1, which would allow me to access those data and which would sync automatically with my phone and laptops. Anything else would be me trying new things as I would have place to do that.

I might be thinking wrong, but currently my thought process is here:

CPU: i3 14100T is what I found for reasonable price(?) 190 € available in shops around me

(found as well i3 12100 for more money so I thought previous option would be better)

CPU cooler Nh-l9i-17XX compatible with LGA 1700 socket within 55mm limit

MB: (I read somewhere that ASUS and Gigabyte have best BIOS for setting up and achieving deeper C states)

ASUS B760M plus Wifi II - (because of 3x M.2) and 4x SATA - about 150 €

alternatively

ASUS Pro Q670M-C-CSM - 2x M.2 6x SATA server MB (supports ECC - is that necessary/worth the money? Seems people are either for or against it without any solid conclusions. Could you please comment on ECC RAM - is it worth the investment or can ZFS do similar job for example?) - cca 180 €

I found some Gigabyte MBs as well dont want to post my whole excel…

Gigabyte B760M AORUS ELITE AX for example 4x SATA (although this one has 3x M.2, in shops I could inly find with 2x M.2 variant for some reason) - 170€

as well in China for similar price hm

    1. If you could please help me choose right MB CPU, may be PSU then according to that. If you will need some more information from me, please ask. I am using mainly AI agents to learn and then read some of the sources it quotes. I don`t really understand relationship between - what I will do vs what hw will I need for that.
  • Would you buy/recommend those Chinese MBs or would you recommend me rather stay with known manufacturers?

  • If my thought process is wrong please correct me

  • if you have any other comments, questions, suggestions please share. I don`t really have anyone who would help me with this.

  • I got asked as well, why I don`t want commercial solution - Because I think I could build my own thing by my own ideas, either by doing mistakes or by getting some help from places as here and doing less mistakes plus it is nice way how to spend spare time and learn something new plus it`s limitless in sense of possibilites.

  • by AIs electricity consumption is very similar while idling (N305 vs 14100T) so my concern is, what I read, troubles if CPU would not be able to enter lower C states thus would keep consuming too much electricity (basically all AIs suggested me 14100T over those Chinese boards although all of them agreed that N305 is powerful enough

  • Thank you!

Lets start with ECC.

It has been talked to death about on the internet. It is useful but not necessary. The most useful ability for home use is for getting warnings if a DIMM is starting to go bad IMO.

I do not like China special boards. They are a last resort if you can not find anything else that fits the budget and needs.

Since you are currently only needing a NAS for dual 12TB drives just get a used office PC and start learning. Think of (optiplex 3070 tower, elitedesk 800 g3) Office PC generally has been optimised for good idle performance. 7th gen Intel or never should be fine. Idle power has not improved much after that for desktop. You will only get knowledge by doing experimenting. The office PC can later be sold for a minimal loss or kept as a second server.

Once you have the experience the you can build a fancy NAS based on what you actually want to achieve.
