Building a Editing and Gaming Rig -Z170 Chipset-

I do a lot of video editing and it is about time to update from my current build. Gaming is also important on this build. I would like peoples opinions on parts I have selected and if there are better ones available. I have gone with a black and red color scheme. Also yes I did choose the i7 because editing comes before gaming otherwise I would have gone with the i5.

Should definitely go X99, 5820k + 390 with some silence optimized case/cooler currently at $1500

What about 2 1080p displays over that ultra wide? It would be about 100 bucks cheaper and give you more screen real estate. Though it becomes a bit less cheap if you wanted a decent monitor arm set up to go with it, but then you have a nice monitor arm set up.

Otherwise a 1440p display is going to give you more pixels for the same price as that ultra wide

Would definitely consider the 5820k over that i7 for any kind of productivity work. Much better value imo.

X99 for the corecount, and the mobo's are not that much more expensive.
My suggestion as amd fanboy, no reason to hide it, Run from Asus GPUs... And MSI. MSI Lightning is fine, but the standard stuff and the Asus stuff - very bad experiences all the time. The Asus mobo's - great. The Asus GPUs - don't.
Recommending Sapphire. Had two Sapphire products in the last 6 years, one of them I still have. They are as advertised. The best performance and cooling option for AMD GPU's.
Other choice is Gigabyte. I know people don't like them much, but I have never had a bad gigabyte product. Always runs as advertised and there was no issues.
PS: for hardware like this may I recommend a larger case for better airflow? Not going to be more expensive at all. Phanteks Enthoo Pro or Pro M. Non restricted front intake, better watercooling support, better airflow, similar price, and if you find Pro M anywhere should be around 70-75 $ and it has more features and better almost everything.

Went with that MSI due to jay's review mentioning it properly cooling the VRAM on the card rather than just using a heatpad or something, I think.

Op´s original build is basicly a very decent setup for gaming, and also a bit of rendering.
However if you realy do allot of video rendering on a daily base, then i think that a 5820k X99 setup would be a better work horse for you.
5820K offers 6 cores 12 threads and supports quadchannel memory, this will realy help you in your rendering workload.

As far as gaming goes, the skylake 6700k is indeed a bit better out of the box.
However, if you overclock the 5820k to lets say 4.0GHz, the diffrence will be minimal.
But in rendering the 5820k will blow the 6700k out of the water atm.

Next to that the r9-390X is not worth it over a R9-390.
The performance diffrence between these 2 gpu´s is so minor, that its realy hard to justify the extra costs for the 390X imo.

is there any specific reason why you want m-atx?

I have gone m-atx as I need a smaller form factor. I think I will go with x99 and the 5820k. As for the case I have been sold on it due to this video and I have liked Corsair's products for years.

So I changed the build to x99 and a R9 390 as I seen there is almost no difference in performance. But which GFX card?

Bump.

dont buy either of those Asus cards, their coolers are garbage.
Sapphire 390 Nitro is one of the best 390´s out there.
Also the Msi 390 Gaming is a good choice.

Is there any specific reasons to go M-atx?
Also on a side note, those 3000mhz DDR4 rams are basicly fine.
But if you can grab 2133mhz or 2400mhz for allot cheaper, then i would recommend to do that.
Since highspeed ram doest realy make much sense in most cases.

I have used Sapphire in the past and didn't have much luck with there cards. If you really insist that the Asus cards are garbage then I will try the Msi card. Also sorry for the late reply I have gotten busy with work doing a lot of overtime.

For some reason the Asus 390 (x) cards seem to run realy hot.
They also had this issue with the 290 (x) cards.
I realy dont understand why this is still an issue Asus?
i mean they have designed a triple fan strix cooler, and it still is not adequate enough.

Sapphire basicly is one of the best AMD gpu manufacturers out there.
THey are also AMD´s board partner.
That you had bad luck with them, exaly surprises me a bit.

Alright here is the build I have set up. I now have the X99 platform with a 5820K which I will slightly overclock. An R9 390 instead of the X variant and have gone with Msi instead of Asus for the Gfx card. The ASRock board has a lot of red so I switched the ram out for its black equivalent, same model just black instead of red. I will have an extra fan but I know someone who could use it.

Well, they advertise their 300series cooler as the quietest. This is fairly true, as the fans don't spin until 60C. The issue is, the cooler is not designed to keep the gpu cool. It's designed to be quiet. And it reaches 80+ degrees no problem.
The other explanation is that Asus are just bad at this. And I am willing to accept this, since for the last couple of years there have been a lot of issues with their GPU's...
I would also stay away from MSI from personal experience. They have the silence right as well. One fan spins on low temperatures, and when it gets hot the other kicks in. However some reviews also reported high temperatures. Some stated, that after reapplying thermal paste the temps are fine. I would just go with Sapphire.
