Build Help - ASRock X870E Taichi

I’m finalizing a flagship build for a dual-purpose role: a high-intensity Java/Docker development workstation and a 24/7 Plex Media Server.

I’ve picked these parts for high-uptime reliability and storage expansion, but I have some specific concerns regarding AM5 stability and memory training. I’d love a technical critique.

The Build:

• CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 9950X (16-Core)

• Motherboard: ASRock X870E Taichi WIFI

• GPU: Palit RTX 5080 GameRock OC (16GB GDDR7)

• RAM: 64GB (2x32GB) XPG Lancer Blade DDR5-6000 CL30 (EXPO/XMP)

• SSD (OS/Dev): 2TB Samsung 9100 Pro (PCIe 5.0)

• HDD (Plex): 2x 12TB Seagate Exos X18 (Enterprise Rated)

• Cooler: Arctic Liquid Freezer III 360mm AIO

• Case: Fractal Meshify 3 XL (Light Tint)

• PSU: Super Flower Leadex VII Platinum PRO 1000W (ATX 3.1)

• Accessories: 1x extra Fractal Momentum 14 fan.

Specific Concerns:

  1. ASRock Taichi + 64GB Stability: I’ve heard mixed reports about BIOS maturity on the X870E Taichi when handling 64GB kits. Does the current 2026 AGESA (1.3.0.0a) fix the 3-5 minute boot times, or should I pivot to MSI Carbon?

  2. Storage Bottlenecks: I chose the Taichi for the 6 native SATA ports. Are there any PCIe lane-sharing “gotchas” I missed when running a Gen 5 SSD and a 50-series GPU simultaneously on this board?

  3. Enterprise Drive Noise: The Seagate Exos are loud. Does anyone have experience with the Meshify 3 XL’s dampening? Should I move them to a DAS, or is internal okay for a bedroom/office setup?

  4. PSU Choice: Is 1000W enough for the 5080 power spikes when the 9950X is under full compile load?

Roast the build if you must, but I’m looking for “set and forget” stability.

Thanks in advance!

  1. This seems to be 1DPC-2DPC confusion. If the 1DPC config’s even close to stability training should be be a few seconds. Well, on ASRock anyway. MSI still usually manages to stay under a minute, I think, though I haven’t timed it.
  2. Refer to the block diagram in the manual.
  3. Decent chance 10 or 12 TB Exos is probably the beginning of 20 dB(A) helium. Every 3.5 I’ve measured is a bit different and a lot depends on workloads and how much time the drives spend spun down. But mostly I barely notice 20 dB(A) IronWolf Pro and Exos with Red Pros being a bit louder. So far the 12+ TB IronWolves have had the least intrusive noise profile after Exos 2X18. Most DASes are pretty awful so I’d try internal first and NAS second. Dampening that does much for noise will just hotbox the drives.
  4. Refer to the power column in your build spreadsheet, consult the VII’s Cybenetics noise map, Table 3-3’s excursions in the ATX 3.1 spec, and spike measurements for 5080s. I wouldn’t, however, expect compilation to load the dGPU.

Having built both ASRock and MSI in AM5 I’d avoid the Carbon. While ASRock improved from AM4 to AM5, MSI took their lagging AM4 BIOS and made it worse. That includes boot times substantially longer than ASRock’s, a restart to flash process that’ll brick the board if you’re not aware of specific posts on like Reddit, and other basic fails. Only reasons I’d consider MSI are PCIE_PWR1 for GPU return currents and that Wendell says they’ve some advantage in 2DPC overclocks. PCIE_PWR1 applies to 9070 XT, though, which I’d prefer to 5080 here due to 12-pin power’s problems with melting and self ejection plus Nvidia’s apparently ongoing difficulties getting back to stable drivers.

I quit buying Fractal a couple years ago due to chronically low quality and their support here consisting of one guy who just tells you to fuck off. For example Lancool 207’d be fine here, slightly outperforming the Meshify at half the cost. The additional Momentum in the BOM seems probably to be for the rear, which I’ve failed to measure a difference for in exhaust with top 360 exhaust. Rear intake was warmer.

Liquid Freezer III or III Pro? Particularly for the Pro AM5 results are mixed. If GA II Lite hasn’t already been considered it’s worth a look.

Given AImageddon NVMes are kind of whatever you can get but mind Samsung’s small pSLCs if large, rapid writes are a workload component. 2 TB is small enough the 70 °C operating temperature limit probably won’t be an issue either. Here remaining SN8100 stock is substantially marked up from 9100 and Sandisk’s Optimus 8100 price gouging is 2.2x more than 9100, so it’s kill the product line stupid.

I’ve been running a 96gb(2x48) 6000mhz kit on the taichi with zero issue since the 9950x3d came out. Memory training didnt take more than a few minutes and i never have issues with boot times.

Build it, flash bios, let it do its thing. and you should be good to go.
