Boken pcie socket Thinkstation p620

So I got my hands on a thinkstation p620 mother, trying to build a cheap workstation, however the default pcie socket is broken. is it possible to reassign the socket or do i need to repair it? Looking forward to any advice.

If you need to ask, repairing a PCIe slot is beyond your (current) abilities. Recycle the unit, it’s not really worth it (repairs are very costly).

Alternatively, rebuild using a new mainboard+CPU, if you’re lucky you can reuse the RAM from the old system. The old CPU might be worth salvaging and sold off.

The board should have other pcie slots eventhough they would be slower.
As mentioned, repairing it might not be worth the trouble.

Thanks for the reply. I don’t mind working on it myself. The problem is the way the slot is soldered to the board is not through the pcb but on a layer. I want to know if anyone has repaired something like this before I attempt fixing it. And it’s worth my time.

I’ve never done anything like this so can’t really tell but if the slot is just soldered on the surface you might have to remove it to re-solder completely.

Go for it and let us know how it goes. The only way to learn to make complicated repairs like a full pcie slot is to try it, several times, until eventually you get it figured out.

As long as you treat it as a learning experience you risk nothing, after all it’s already broken!

To your question, it’s certainly possible and worth your time if you learn something from the experience.

Watch Linus’ recent adventures upgrading RAM on his Apple devices, it’s quite similar but more advanced then a simple RAM chip. So, if the rest of the mainboard still works, don’t risk it

Thanks I really appreciate yours and everyone’s reply. The rest of the board works. And it turns out I don’t need to use that specific slot. Though I’m down a slot basically got myself a massively discounted Thinkstation P620. Once again thanks everyone.
