Blu-Ray, DVD, and CD Reader For Backing Up Discs

My CD drive finally died. I need to get it replaced ASAP to get a few backups made.

I want to replace it with a Blu-ray drive that will allow me to backup Blu-ray discs. I remember there are certain models of drives that have firmware’s that can be loaded to make this process possible/easier. I don’t have the time to research it all right now though.

Can anyone recommend a drive that will allow me to do that in the future when I have time to do my homework but get a drive on the way now so I can take care of business right now? Are there external drives that allow this or are they all internal? Would love a recommendation for internal and external.

I would recommend checking out this list/forum:
What is LibreDrive? - www.makemkv.com

The last post on the thread has the full list of supported drives/FW. I have yet to flash a drive so YMMV.

This is an enclosure I’ve been eyeing to allow an internal 5.25 optical drive to be an external drive.

ASUS BW-16D1HT are decent drives, in general Pioneer and Buffalo (latter are often rebranded Pioneer models) are solid choices too. I also have a vague memory of LG/Hitachi’s older drives being more preferable than newer ones (BH16NS40 over NS60) although I don’t recall why at the moment.

The ASUS BW-16D1X-U is an excellent external drive. It’s not made with portability in mind, but it’s also one of the few Blu-ray drives that doesn’t need any flashing to read and backup PS3 discs if you’re into that sort of thing. :no_mouth:

Some of them can read PS3 Blueray Disks >.> <.<

I simply use this specific LG Blu-ray internal drive, put it on some silicone feet and use a SATA USB 3.0 adapter bridge.

Yeah that drive and the Asus BW-12D1S-U, which I am petter sure it the same drive. I think it’s just those drive are just normal drive in an enclosure.

I know for sure the one I mentioned is an internal drive in an enclosure, but it’s not that one. The number after the BW in the product name is an indicator of the speed at which the drive writes, at least for the ASUS models.

That is neat. I never know that about Asus drive before.
