Best way to remote desktop?

Ever since I tried steam link anywhere from the phone… it had an option to stream desktop. I found this incredibly useful, and, tried it from PC to PC… However, there’s no option. So, what’s the best way to have all features for remote desktop? Need to do video editing on the go.

I had good luck with TeamViewer. Ran CAE simulations and CAD on my home rig from my laptop while working with friends on class projects.

If you are running Windows there is already a Remote Desktop there. If you don’t have Windows 10 Pro you will have to download Remote Desktop Wrapper that will enable Remote Desktop on your Windows 10 Home version. From there you will have to do some port forwarding on your router so you can connect from any internet connection not just your local network.

Maybe X2Go.

The X2Go server must be running linux, not Windows. It’s cross-platform on the client side. Also, it is X only, so no Wayland. If you want to have a remote session, it probably can’t be Gnome Shell or KDE. If these aren’t issues, then X2Go can be pretty nice.

this is a very bad idea

You can x2go remmina

A vpn to your home can open up more options, but there is substantial overhead.

Sorry, what?

I do not see that OP mentioned a specific system.

There are many solutions. It depends on your preferences: TigerVNC, RealVNC, TeamViewer, Remmina, NoMachine, Apache Guacamole, XRDP, Xpra, TightVNC, ScreenConnect… and others

That’s why I mentioned the restrictions.

It’s not clear if the OP is looking for a client, or trying to choose the server/protocol.

Many of those are simply different clients for the same underlying protocol, eg. all the ones that use VNC. Also, some clients, like Remmina, can use multiple protocols, which is one reason I like it. X2Go is based on NoMachine’s NXv3. X2Go has some neat advantages like its application mode. Looks like Xpra does too.

I do wish the underlying tech and server requirements would be mentioned more explicitly.

Do you have an opinion on X2Go vs Xpra?

i like rdp with a dns service as a cheap solution for easy remote desktop solution.

jump for android is a good client for android and i believe ios devices

anydesk works great and is my current preferred client at the moment

nomachines is great for just about any desktop environment although it can be a bit temperamental.

of course there is the various vnc’s

but mstsc.exe pretty much works less you wanna get fancy and try remote printing… that can be a fun lil game.

Nothing replaces RDP over VPN (do not open ports, you are just asking to get ransomed or worse) for me, but Splashtop comes in close second when I need to do something graphically intensive.

NoMachine is pretty decent, but I’ve not used it outside my homenetwork. Works on both Linux and Windows though

Now that is awesome.

I do not have. I would have to do tests. X2Go sometimes indicates some anomalies in the application mode on ARMv7

Generally, I try to avoid the remote desktop if it is not absolutely necessary. I always feel too few fps and lag responsiveness. The basic things are ok, but I personally would not like to edit the video in such a way.

Cool toys. Only the key question to whom to send the address of my paypal?

VPN into your network (ex. with OpenVPN) and then VNC. You open yourself to the least amount of attack surfaces, however, you will have to deal with a very high latency connection.
