im about to play this game for the first time, what mods do you really recommend.
Replace D-Dog's model with Ocelot. Nothing more is needed.

The base game is really solid as is, It's not quite the same as something like skyrim is in terms of modding anyway. However you can make your own playlists for helicopter rides in-game which is pretty sweet.
I had mine set to All Along the Watchtower - Jimi Hendrix for quite some time haha
I would recommend mods that decrease wait times for crafting things like processing materials, research weapons, building bases, etc because the game has a lot of that and it is pretty annoying. Find mods that allow you to acquire high-ranking soldiers earlier in the game.
This is based on my experience beating the game on PS4 and how I dislike some of the game's design decisions.

Find a mod that disables all expectations.
Specially online interactions for single player mode and for the story, the game isn't finished.
