My gaming rig has now become a shareable pc with my wife. She has a design business and needs to keep her files secure from corruption and attacks. She uses facebook and all that jazz. I just run steam and word for documents i write.
What is the best software for protection? I dont mind spending a little bit of cash if the product is good.
Although I'm not in the same situation I have been using Comodo Internet Security (a free solution) for years now on my pc and laptop and similarly on my parent's pc and laptop and while some say it is a bit on the heavy side (although it uses less then 15mb's when idle on my system) and is intrusive at first (it contains a firewall that needs to know your habits, so it asks for rules when doing certain things after the programme is installed), I have never had any problems with the programme itself or with any threats since in use, it detects things quickly and never failed to contain it in my case. It even has a game mode that completely silences the programme (no alerts or scheduled scans) when you play. It is also highly customizable.
Only thing I did during installation is to not install the feature called GeekBuddy (some online support thing) and disabled the Sandbox feature when it is running. Just personal preferences
I'd recommend AVG internet security, it contains EVERYTHING, and I really mean everything, firewalls, web browsing protection, identity protection, E-mail protection and the normal virus detector, very user friendly, and has won alot of awards for being the best security.
it also has a gaming mode, and allows you to change the settings to your likings, also has a handy gadget, if you like gadgets. and last but most certainly not least, it gets updates frequently.
I've been using it for about 4 years now, and I havent had a single problem.
NOTE: if you have a weak system, it might slow it down a little.
I used to use AVG, but now I been using Avast for the past 3 years or so (Free version), love the sandbox feature. Nothing bad about AVG just don't use it much anymore. Also I use Avast with Malwarebytes.
On the note of firewalls, I was thinking of making myself a pfSense PC after watching a RTW video about it.
Microsoft Security Essentials does a fine job, and it's free and light weight. I have it just in case but really it's pretty easy to avoid viruses and such. I put it on any clients systems, without even giving them the option of one that cost money lol
I agree. I used comodo for about 2 years. A month or so ago in trying windows 8, I really liked the windows security essentials. That's all I use now, best part is that it doesnt bug you. You get the occational windows firewall pop up and UAC notice but that's it. With windows 8 it comes pre installed, and with windows 7, the chances are it's already there from a windows update just wating for you to use it :P.
The problem I have with all other anti-virus programs are that they start off free. Then they slowly try make you buy there stuff. You get pop ups advertising to you and all sorts of rubbish. I remember when comodo was free and 100% clean. Now it's got marketing junk written all over it.. "NO I DONT WANT TO JOIN YOUR FACEBOOK PAGE!"
Microsoft Security Essentials is all you need it is as good as anything on the market and costs nothing. Most of all it is quiet, meaning that it just protects your computer without telling you every 5 minutes that its doing a great job at it.
I use Unthreat Antivirus and I like it because it doesn't slow down my computer while scanning and I can still go on surfing the net and all the other stuff I do. It's free and easy to use, you can check it out here www.unthreat.com
Personally, I had an freak issue with AVG. Tl;dr brother downloads some random crap and corrupts AVG.
In order to remove it, I had to go into regedit, delete active registry files, and force remove avg using safemode. I still have some residule files, but nothing is running.
I recomend Avast. Much less hastle, and works like a charm.
