When on a deployment many years ago I had a beer in MacKay called XXXX Gold. I loved this beer so much, but I've never been able to find it in the US. Does anyone know if it is exported at all or where I may be able to get a hold of some?
Can you describe the flavor and/or taste at all?
Can you describe the taste/flavor at all?
It was a golden color, very smooth and potent. I know it got me nice and toasty real quick. I just remember a bunch of miners in the bar buying rounds and feeding me pitchers, lol. It was probably 6 years ago or so.
Very simillar to Toohey's Gold.
I am from QLD, AU and I am a beer lover. Everybody here knows XXXX the problem is everybody knows it as Australia's cheapest and nastiest beer, which it is. Don't get me wrong some people like the taste and all but it is definitely one of our cheapest locally made beers.
It is made to compete with other local cheap brews like Victoria Bitter etc.
If you want a nice Australia beer, look for James Squire, Golden Ale is nice.
^ this
Except it's the 2nd nastiest beer - no beer on this planet is worse than fosters export beer.
I absolutly agree. See this is what I get for being a dumb american. I typically like very dark lagers along the lines of Smithwicks -(one of my favorites).
Thanks for the suggestions. I remember enjoying xxxx but obviously I am a newbie in the ways of Australian beers. Has Some Victoria Bitter in Vanuatu when I was there around the same time, and yes it was nasty.
I always thought that Foster's export was Crown Lager?
Being born in QLD XXXX is in my blood, when I did drink habitually in my teens / early 20's this was my poison. Was never much of a fan of VB, Coopers was alright if my memory serves me correctly. You'd be lucky to find a store these days selling Fosters. but yeah with XXXX sponsoring the QLD Maroons (rugby league team) I would drink it out of pride more than anything, as gross as it seemingly would be now. Yuk... just thinking about it.
To OP I remember a beer in Vanuatu called 'Tusker'... or something like that. Did you try that?
YES! I remember Tusker. I don't remeber how it was as a beer but I did have it while I was there. I only got to spend 2 days in Vanuatu and 2 days in MacKay, but I enjoyed my time there and would love to go back sometime. I also got to spend a few hours in Sydney on a layover when I flew in to meet the ship I was on.
XXXX sounds like the QLD equivalent to Pabst Blue Ribbon. It's nasty but cheap and a party favorite(at least for the over indulgent 20 year olds.) I have tried to refine my tastes as I have gotten older.
I live outside of Mackay, Queensland, and I am very familiar with XXXX Fourex Gold.

Fourex Gold XXXX is brewed in Brisbane, our capital city in Queensland.

There is nothing comparable to drinking a few XXXX's with a platter of Queensland Mud Crabs, and Prawns (Shrimp) you have caught yourself (even Coral Trout fillets freshly grilled)

One product you should have tasted is 'Bundaberg Rum', easily one of the best rums in the world. Make one strong one with Coke or Wimmers Double Sars, and finish off a great drinking session before going to sleep.

The other Aussie beer I like is: Hahn Premium.

Why choose the XXXX gold when there's The Little creature who are the best beer i have ever test (in my opinon of course) !
For your problem to find it in usa, try to check with all the brewery living in Straya, because i know that some of them can send you pack of beer.
Hope i could help you, G'day mate

There's a lot of different beer made by them, just unbelievable
Little creatures used to be a decent beer until Lion-Nathan bought them out - now I wouldn't touch the stuff.
If you want a decent off-the-shelf Aussie beer try Mountain Goat (organic) or Mclaren Vale IPA - If you want craft, try Lobethal Brewery or Port Dock (voted best stout in the world).
I seriously think that they make all 3 of them (VB, Fosters and xxxx) in the same vats and have a tube split 3 ways, I hate most Australian beers, the exceptions are tooheys extra dry, tooheys old (stout), James squires pale ale, pure blond (low carb) and there is a place in Alexandria (Sydney) called the rocks brewing company, they make hand crafted Aussie beers that set all the store bought crap to shame.
this is the rocks brewery website: http://rocksbrewing.com/rocksbrewing/welcome.
Still the same brewers though, even after being bought out. The buyout actually gave the brewers more free time to create the special batches and limited edition beers. Try and get some of those as the ones I have had have been excellent.
