bedHedd's marvel rivals adventure

overview

I’m a bit late to give my impressions of Marvel Rivals, but I wanted to jot these notes down before posting a Steam review after some longer sessions. I might make replies to this if my impressions change.

So far I had 2 sessions of Marvel Rivals with my friends. These are my impressions after 5 hours of playtime in quickplay. Prior games I have played include Team Fortress 2, Quake Champions, and Overwatch

The comparisons to Overwatch are accurate. This game is third person Overwatch with a cell shaded art style and leverages similar game modes (payload and king of the hill).

things the game gets right

  1. The destructible environments are unique and characters with low mobility to challenge positions.
  2. Built in character synergies (for example hawk eye’s ultimate will spot for black widow or kills Hela earn will resurrect Thor/Loki or grant health if they aren’t dead) from appearance in comics result in bonuses that make the game interesting
  3. There is a replay and highlights system within a month of the game’s launch
  4. There aren’t too many tanks with shields, as a DPS player, I can actually punish out of position players with headshots/criticals.

Things worthy of improvement

With the praise out of the way here are some places of improvement:

  1. The default graphics settings use frame generation, which kills performance on my 7900xtx and rtx 2070.
    • If your game dips below 40 fps, I would recommend turning frame generation off and use TAAU.
  2. The game’s anticheat system requires administrator permissions and you have to click through another launcher menu to start the game.
    • After the game launches, you are greeted with another login screen
  3. If you aren’t running a ssd with extra storage space, your load times will suffer
  4. The visual clutter is just as bad as Overwatch. The health bar is at the center of the screen, the remaining ammo is on the left, and the abilities and ultimate are on the right
  5. The maps are long and confusing to navigate, combined with long cool downs for movement abilities (outside of passive classes) make navigating to the objective tedious and boring
    • the last point of some payload maps are very defenders biased and certain teams will switch to almost all tanks to stall out overtime
    • I hope that the developers will get more mapping experience with player feedback

If this game launched at the same time as Blizzard had their numerous scandals and decline of Overwatch League, I would have gotten hooked on more easily. Most of the time these days, I play live service games when my buddies want to. I don’t have the motivation to solo queue ranked.

Hela primary fire doing lots of damage on headshots is pretty fun

I can see @kreestuh and teampgp getting into this game. Especially if you miss old overwatch

Oh yeah I also crash a bunch as well. Haven’t tried any suggested fixes, but based on the comments it seems to be a unreal engine bug

Might try this guide suggested by a comment

These settings seemed to resolve my crashing issues I had earlier. I think the global illumination caused a lot of my crashes

new skin!

found another launch option so that I can launch marvel rivals without admin permissions
cmd /min /C "set __COMPAT_LAYER=RUNASINVOKER && start "" %command%"
