I took the time to complete this list. It took me 4-5 hours to complete. In every case, I only looked up my real name using the site search (and ctrl + f for age/location to filter my names out).

I created a throwaway email address for websites that required a email address. My original plan was to use the masking addresses of firefox relay, but it seemed to cause some issues for some websites

You might wonder why I don’t opt for a data broker management website, given that I spent 4-5 hours on this task.

I don’t trust the services to do a accurate or thorough job. The companies advertising data deletion services are backed by the same companies that offer poor vpn services
There isn’t any independent auditors or reviewers that can check their processes.
User reviews are biased and other companies trying to gain market share

I was just scanning Reddit for user opinions of Incogni. I work for a company that receives thousands of requests per week from Incogni each containing information about the user who has requested their data to be removed. We are an ad tech company and although we don’t actually collect user data through any of our advertising solutions we do receive lots of automated data removal requests. We have a part of the business which requires a user to sign up, so we do have have some user data which is provided to grant users login access. Nothing more.

The reality is we receive about 10k emails per week from various “Data Privacy” services which are essentially broadcasting your user data even to companies who have never heard of you. These data removal services generally send us your email address, phone number, physical address and some kind of “power of attorney” or authorization type document which the user has signed, so we also sometimes have a personal signature.

This in itself seems pretty shocking, but also consider that every one of these is a legal request that must be processed by my company and any other company that receives these. We archive the requests after processing so we have a record of when we received them and we can confirm they were processed. So… Before these services arose we didn’t have any of your data. But now… people are paying a “security” company to force your data upon us (and lots of other companies) and you have to hope that all of these companies are complying with the request and also handling the data contained in these requests safely.

I doubt anybody who pays for these services is actually aware of what’s happening tbh because there’s no way I’d use one of these services even if it was free.

I wanted to include this in the introduction of the guide, but I figured that people looking for guides, wouldn’t care about the preamble
I saw this phone posted here

and saw it got a teardown guide

So I pulled the trigger and got this phone to learn the process of rooting it, as I had reservations with rooting my daily driver phone. My past experiences with rooting lead to two bricked tablets. The phone arrived in May

I made some initial attempts to root it, but didn’t get any progress. While working on it intermittently, I forgot the previous steps I performed. I started the first draft of the guide June 1st first as a personal message.

When I had spare mental bandwidth, I document my process and any guides I found/tried.

Fedora does not natively have adb installed, we’ll need to install adb and enable fastboot.

The first documentation was for how to get my fedora desktop to talk with adb. Previously I had been calling a adb folder. The guide gave me a package I can install so that I wouldn’t have to call a script for adb
It took a couple attempts before I got it properly working. This initially helped me figure out why the fastboot devices command didn’t work

After I got a image flashed, I couldn’t figure out why adb couldn’t detect the flashed image

The findings there got updated with the section. The additional instructions for fastboot were as a result of getting errors while flashing lineage os

Once again, having chatgpt help me get the correct terminal commands to debug my issue.

this section will help root the phone and prepare the images. Instructions adapted from the reddit post linked above

start by build version using adb

* find the version on [unihertz google drive](https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1feYyrSFOPcpJUOp4BdQBHjPFZVXQ9Ubx) and download it. For my phone, it is within the `None_EEA` folder. I searched for `g58v89c2k` on the drive page

* copy `boot.img` to your phone
* open magisk on your phone, navigate to the install portion, insert the file, and patch the boot.img

* insert select and patch file
* copy the patched file from your phone to the pc in a location that you can access. The filename will have a structure of `magisk_patched*.img`. I personally put it in my `stock_root_images` folder with the `boot.img`, `vbmeta` and other img files
* with the phone plugged in, run the `adb devices` command and verify that the device shows up. Sample output below

No worries my friend, stay calm, you can still recover from this

power down your phone. If you are stuck in a boot loop follow these instructions to enter recovery mode, which includes options you can use to power down the device I’ve copied the instructions here in case the post gets deleted

Just tried this myself, u/picklift, and I think it can more simply be stated as:

Hold Power (P) & Volume-Up (V+) until initial boot screen (“logo”) appears.

Release P button while still holding V+ until “No command” screen shows.

Press V+ and P buttons simultaneously to enter the Recovery Menu (you may need to do this multiple times - it often doesn’t seem ready to accept it right away, dunno why/what it’s doing behind the scenes).

NOTES:

You technically don’t have to hold V+ when first powering on, just within the first second or two of the initial boot screen appearing - you can press it any time up until then. You also can release the P button after a second or two and just hold the V+ until the “No Command” screen. It’s just easier to tell people to hold them both initially to ensure the timing requirements are met.

The “No command” screen should appear within a few seconds of the screen dimming slightly from the initial full brightness - any longer and you’ll know that it’s instead booting normally. If you want to try to get to the Recovery Menu again, then you don’t have to wait until it finishes booting - just hold the P button for several seconds until the screen goes blank as it reboots from scratch (rather than waiting until it fully boots just so you can shut it down again). Then proceed with step #2 above.

if you don’t do step #3 above within a minute of the “No command” screen appearing, then the device will reboot itself.

Download and install SP Flash Tool V6, the instructions have been adapted from this reddit guide also linked above Jelly Star Rooted link Using the instructions from reddit

Recover / unbrick / unroot

If you mess up it might result in a bootloop, just like what happened to me several times… The phone will reboot twice and then show a warning something is wrong and you get the options to try again or do a factory reset. Both options won’t fix anything. Luckily it’s quite easy to completely revert to factory settings, you can also use this method to easily unroot again.
3.Note again that this will fully wipe the phone*

For the factory reset you can follow the same steps as for the Jelly 2, which you can find it here. I used “SP Flash Tool V6.2316” which worked great with the Jelly Star
4.Install the drivers and follow the steps under “Flashing the Stock Rom”* NEVER EVER CHOOSE “FORMAT ALL” IN SP FLASH TOOL, as this will wipe your IMEI number and Google Key

Let me know if you have any questions or certain steps are unclear!

Launch SP Flash Tool V6. Instructions adapted from the flashing stock rom section of How to use the SP Flash Tool for MTK based devices.

Start flash_tool.exe.

Choose the scatter file from the directory you extracted the stock ROM into.

Select Firmware Upgrade from the dropdown menu.

Hit Download.

Power down your phone.

Connect your phone to your PC.

Turn on your phone.

The flashing should begin right away.

These steps were a result of me flashing the incorrect image. I didn’t realize that the guide Jelly Star - Rooted! I referenced was written for the European version. Since I had worked on this intermittently, I couldn’t traceback to the guide of getting the correct factory version.

During the making of this guide there was only one firmware available for EU > 2023072513_g58v89c2k_dfl_eea.zip

When I flashed the european version, I got the boot loader stuck in the orange state. This was a massive setback and demotivated me as I thought I had bricked the phone. It wasn’t until I had a upcoming trip where I needed the phone when I found the motivation to continue debugging. One factory reset later using SP Flash Tool got me back to stock where I looked up how to get the build and firmware version

You need a higher DPI, you can change it in a user friendly way through settings>display>display size, smaller is a higher dpi, or you can set it to around 460 in developer options.

Have you already enabled “Quick pulldown” under the status bar settings? At least for me, other than the design language and some default tiles, nothing changed (functionally) when using the quick pulldown – it takes me the same as ever to do anything with QS.

This took a while to write

I only had bandwidth to work on this in the evenings on weekends.

You’ll notice that it took a month for me to translate the guide from the simple steps in this post into the full guide

Step 7 and 8 took up the majority of the time. If I cut those out, then I could have gotten the guide out earlier. Looking back, I could have split the guide out into multiple posts, but I don’t think I would have had the motivation to continue each step.

The two biggest blockers were:

Figuring out how to setup vlan tagging on the netgear switch
Configuring OPNsense to create a dhcp for the vlan interface and apply firewall rules

The thing that stumped me the most was getting a internet connection from the wireless access point when I connected my desktop and other devices. On my desktop, fedora would disconnect from the access point, while on my phone it would connect, but report no internet. I’m not sure if the issue was caused by not having a DHCP setup or if the issue was caused by the vlan having the same subnet as my router. A lot of guides still used the ISC DHCPv4 service so it was hard to follow along.

The biggest breakthrough was watching the firewall rules from Jim’s garage

Although he used ISC, the explanation was easy enough to map over to KEA

The thing I am still uncertain about is how to create a vlan to isolate my ‘smart’ devices so that they can receive traffic, but not send any back to the internet

Turns out the link/search indexer wasn’t the issue. I tried using Chris Titus Tech’s winutil to debloat my pc.

Using the standard option within the tweaks menu helped debloat my system from a recent windows update and reduce my ram usage. Unfortunately it didn’t resolve my issue.

I kept running into intermittent stutters on my pc while gaming, on discord, or watching a video. Event viewer didn’t throw any errors that can trace the issue. I watched task manager, and noticed that my disks had a spike in usage. After some research on the web, I came across this article

I fixed the issue. The problem was PCI Express Link State Power Management was set to maximum power saving. Setting it to off fixed the 100 percent disk problem. Also my system doesn’t freeze anymore. To set it off go to Control Panel\Hardware and Sound\Power Options\Edit Plan Settings\Change advanced power settings\PCI express\Link state power management set it to off for both on battery and plugged in. Here is the screenshot of advanced power settings and task manager after I changed the settings.

There are basically 2 levels of power management in the PCI Express options. The difference between these 2 options are the power savings versus the Latency (Time to recover from the Sleep state). If you select the first option Moderate Power Savings, the power savings are less, but the time to recover from the Sleep state (latency) is much shorter. If you select the Maximum Power Savings, the power savings are greater, but the time to recover from the Sleep state (latency) is much longer.

PCI Express has “active-state” power management, which lowers power consumption when the bus is not active (that is, no data is being sent between components or peripherals). On a parallel interface such as PCI, no transitions occur on the interface until data needs to be sent. In contrast, high-speed serial interfaces such as PCI Express require that the interface be active at all times so that the transmitter and receiver can maintain synchronization. This is accomplished by continuously sending idle characters when there is no data to send. The receiver decodes and discards the idle characters. This process consumes additional power, which impacts battery life on portable and handheld computers. To address this issue, the PCI Express specification creates two low-power link states and the active-state power management (ASPM) protocol. When the PCI Express link goes idle, the link can transition to one of the two low-power states. These states save power when the link is idle, but require a recovery time to resynchronize the transmitter and receiver when data needs to be transmitted. The longer the recovery time (or latency), the lower the power usage. The most frequent implementation will be the low-power state with the shortest recovery time.

I applied the suggested fix and retested with roboquest, after 45 minutes of gameplay, I couldn’t replicate the error from before. I’ll have to keep on monitoring, but I think I may have resolved the issue.

It’s possible the power plans got changed when I installed the 5800x3d cpu or during a windows update. I thought the issue was related to rtx voice and a graphics driver as when I updated my gpu driver I couldn’t replicate the error
