Backup Hygiene: Moving away from Backblaze - thoughts?

Hi all,

A while back I pushed my backups into encrypted S3 buckets off FreeNAS, but also setup another backup into Backblaze. However, the BB cost has skyrocketed in comparison to S3 and I’m killing that account off.

Thoughts on using Azure or GCP for block storage instead? At the moment, my critical backups are under 130GB but I want to push 1-2TB but would like to prevent having to pay a great deal.

Security is of course paramount, and I’ll probably wrap it in a VeraCrypt container, record the MD5 hash and push it into block storage.

Re. VeraCrypt bit I’ve come up with a quick CLI wrapper

Thoughts?

We regularly have backups between 1-4 TB with BB for $7/month on both Windows and MacOS. I am assuming you are running backups direct from NAS and fall into that pricing?

How are you managing this? I have max <600GB and $80+/month. FYI my storage is using buckets (block storage) - not the “PC” backup service.

We are using the PC backup service… remove the exemptions and .vhdx, .img, and .iso’s can suddenly be backed up (though, not nightly due to bandwidth limitations).

Simple scripting and you’re there.

I can’t imagine a reason to pay more than rsync.net charges for backups - $12/mo/TB and no bandwidth charges, integrates well with any nas you like, but also zfs snapshot capabilities in large volumes (since you already use it).

Are you doing a lot of reads off of it? I have ~1.5 to 2TB in Backblaze block storage and I’m paying around $30/mo. I have it setup as a upload only sync from the local backup volume on my Synology, so it only gets written to and files deleted.

I wasnt aware they were offering this kind of backup. Ill check it out. Thanks.

Im planning on using Storj as it has integrations on TrueNAS

BackBlaze has a lot of dark patterns. Make sure version history is turned off. I was getting up to $80/month for my Hetzner server backups, cleared all the old SQL backups, and the next month it was still $80. There’s a setting (I think it’s called Lifecycle or something).

There are a couple of things that are on by default that prevent actual deletes to rack up your bill. Even after you turn them off you have to wait a few hours for their jobs to go in and clean out the old versions.

I really need to move off Backblaze and backup my hosted servers down to my homelab. Fuck Backblaze.

Something isnt right… I use Azure blobs with TrueNAS (file and zvol) and have over almost 2TB cold non geo redundant and send about 120GB a day in changed blocks, less than 30$CAD a month.

Yes, I’m having a huge problem with BackBlaze right now. They are reporting that my account had in excess of 9.3TB for the past couple months but I noticed a sharp uptick on billing from ~$50/mo to $89.61 - and yet they are refusing to provide me detailed reports.

They keep talking about their billing dashboard and pants interface.

I’m wiping and closing my account down today. Already done, now to move this data elsewhere.

Fuck Backblaze.

I totally agree. Their support staff have wasted so much of my time with pointless VAGUE emails. And they keep sending me on wildgoose chases to their silly site.

  • 0 cost transparency
  • No cost calculator
  • Refuse to provide reports (CSV etc). or even basic PDFs - why? They have a pants UI that shows accumulated totals for the current month.
  • Their metrics takes AGES to update

AWS may be “expensive” but damn, I really appreciate the level of transparency their billing dashboard provides.
