Baby's First Rack

Hello everyone! I hope I’m posting in the right place. I’m still new around here, so please let me know.

Aaaanywhooo I have had a busy few months! I installed Linux on my daily driver a few months ago, decided to finally just enroll in school for cyber security like I’ve always wanted to, and the homelab games began. I started with Network gear:

UCG Ultra
Flex Mini 2.5GiB
Ubiquiti 8 Port (4 of which PoE) Gigabit switch

Ubiquiti U7 Lite AP

but it all wound up as a rat’s nest under my media cabinet:

Then, I revived a couple of older computers with some new bits here and there and installed Proxmox on both of them. One is the production server for my personal cloud, and the other is just running a PBS to act as a backup of the first one.
My Production Server is running:
Plex (I snagged a lifetime license for $100 back in like 2019 or something)
Motioneye (one camera running to the front door so I can see when the kitty is home :cat:)
tailscale (because of course)
Home Assistant
Immich (replaced google photos)
Seafile (replaced google docs)
And various other VMs that I can play with for class. This makes playing with different operating systems a breeze.

The real reason for this post though, is that today I finally fixed the rats nest of network gear in my media center. Yes, they are all friction fit in there right now lol but I’m working on that.

Wendell and the rest of the tech youtub
e community got me started aeons ago…LLM’s gave me the confidence to pick up Linux… and now we’re here! Something about a patch panel just makes you feel like an adult, doesn’t it?

I might be a lil early for this Devember I keep hearing about, but here it is anyway lol

Had me in the first half, then I scrolled down a little xD

Very cool, so tiny too.

I assume it was enjoyable to build and switch everything over to the new configuration, anything surprise you or wish you knew before going into what you have now?

Oh, so enjoyable switching to the new config. So satisfying.
I can’t think of anything I wish I had done differently other than get started 20 years ago lol.

If I had money for hard drives I would’ve built a RAID array for the media storage and another for the backup storage, but given the state of things I’m very grateful to have the parts that I do.

Labeled cables, in a rack, at home?

My pile of hardware sure does not have those. And at work, the jack “A1” exists 4 times.
