I purchased a new WRX90 board last week and within the box came fan mounts which I thought was pretty interesting. I was already looking for for a solution to this so it was a welcome surprise.
It seems obvious to me that this was a very last minute answer to the problem as the brackets are pretty basic and don’t exactly fit or work as they come. One on the GPU side needs bent in several places to get up and around the GPU that will surely be placed there. The one at the top would only really cool the right 30% of the DIMMs.
If you do a bit of bending you can make them a bit more effective and get around your GPU however the bottom one is probably not going to be tall enough to both bend in toward the center of the DIMMs and not touch the DIMMs its trying to cool.
Personally it seems obvious to me that the GPU belongs in slot 7. It won’t block any other slots there, and won’t cause you your issues mounting stuff around the DIMMs.
hey there, I also bent the middle holder to get it out of way of the GPU and bent on the screws holding the fan a little so they dont touch the D1 ram stick. i was having some issues with C1 ram stick reaching 85 degree celsius under a brutal cpu+gpu+ram stress test simultaneously after it ran continuously for over 20 min. i knwo it is not a realistic scenario where all parts will be stressed to max, but such a strong pc should be able to push quite a bit given correct power and thermals. so basically i was checking stability under immense pressure. after attaching this fan, i am seeing about 10 degree celsius lower temperature under high stress , plateauing around 75 degree celsius under long period of torture on ram + gpu + cpu (over 20 min continuous)
I found those single fans to be ineffective and went much larger but i’ve also gone to an open frame since then. Wanting to stick to a closed case like you have, i’d consider doing something like the 3d print above which really is necessary if you’re going to be hammering away at the memory.
I have half the memory as you and probably 4-8x the amount of air throughput and I don’t recall the last time i’ve seen temps go above 65 if that helps at all.
Also, i don’t know what cards those are but that top card is probably dumping some really awful heat right on the lower dimms. May want to have a look and see if its worth lowering even a single pci slot.
hey thank you for the info!
these are 2 nvidia maxwell rtx 6000 pro workstation cards - 600W each. you are absolutely right that top card dumping a lot of heat on the lower RAM bank. since yesterday, i did a few more long idle tests and a prolonged 2 hour torture test. my rams are doing much better now and plateauing around 66 degrees under torture. cpu threadripper pro 9965 wx, AIO silverstone 360 - i am getting peak temperature around 86/87 degree plateau after 15 min of torture. gfx cards the bottom one plateauing at 67 degree and top one at 75 degree (top one eats some hot air from the bottom one, so runs hotter). i am preparing a datasheet and full test report. I am going to assign this a birth certificate today. All hail “Tourbillon” the mighty. my previous pc was named ‘Harambe’ xD
Yeah i was afraid those were pro 6000s. I have the max-qs and they dump a lot of heat operating at only 300 watts so I can’t imagine what is they are pushing through the PC.
Again not having a close case nor the same workstation pro 6000s but I can speak to my open case in the cellar which normally sits around 16-18c. Since adding the pro 6000s the cellar now sits at at 23 degrees before I get prompting. At 23 degrees my GPUs run 35-75 degrees idle to working. When i’m really hitting it hard the cellar kisses 30 degrees my GPUs operate 40-90 and thats when i tend to bow out and give it a break.
My point is, the ambient temp plays just as much of a part that the cooling system does. Your GPUs are reeeeeally increasing the ambient temps inside the case. So although you probably have a lot of room to grow when it comes to cooling the DIMMS i bet for you’d have more impact extracting heat than trying to cool.
Take what i say with a grain of salt since i’m not in your position but if it were me, i’d focus on a way to deflect the heat from the GPUs away from the DIMMS. Then supply more/cooler air to the dimms from the front of the case, maybe with some ducting or something?
thanks! I would love to see your open setup. if and when i make something like this or grow even bigger with this one, i would also consider a open set up. I was thinking making my own racks using I beams or cross beams, a lot of drilling though.
