Asus P8H77-M PRO motherboard doesn't detect 2nd ram stick

Hello everyone, i hope someone could help me with this one.

My problem is that when i install the second ram stick the monitor doesn't show anything, instead there's a DRAM LED just showing a red light on and off. The ram sticks are installed in DIMM A2 and B2 as the manual said, and i already pressed the MemOK! button but i have the same problem, nothing appears on the monitor.
The only time it boots to Windows is when i have a single ram stick and it works normally. Also i had another PC with the same cpu and ram and it worked perfectly with 6gb of ram (i'm have at the moment 2x1GB and 2x2GB). Any thoughts on what could be the problem?

Thanks for reading!

Have you checked all possibilities yet?

Let's call the sticks A and B.

Put A in slot A2, see if the PC boots
Put B in slot A2, see if the PC boots
If both options work, the sticks themselves are okay.

Put A or B in slot B2, see if the PC boots

If that works as well :
Put A in slot A2 and B in slot B2, try to boot
Put B in slot A2 and A in slot B2, try to boot

Depending on the result, we will be able to tell if it's a faulty stick, a faulty slot ... or gremlins.

I tried with the two sticks on B2 and neither of both worked :/

I only see the Dram Led flashing and the i press the MemOk! Button but nothing appears on the monitor as i said.
I made a try with the A1 slot and it worked fine.

So the B2 slot is dead. Try putting the sticks in A1 and B1 then. If that combination works, you're still good.

Well also i tried with B1 and is the same as B2 :/

I tried to put both sticks on A1 and A2 an it worked fine, is detecting the 4gb but i dont know if having it that way could have any problems in the future :s

Anyway i would make some tests on B1 slot

I think i would get a single stick 8Gb right now :/

So both B slots are dead.

You can use 2 sticks in the A slots or even a single 8GB stick, but then you'll have the RAM running in single channel mode rather than dual channel.

No worries, the difference isn't THAT big. Personally I wouldn't replace my motherboard for something you'll only really notice in benchmark numbers.

Yeah i think so :/ it really makes me upset because is my first build in a while :(

Having both sticks on A1 and 2 could have a problem in the future or is it fine?

I think i would get a single 8gb stick to stay more safe. Should i get a 1600 dimm or stay with 1333mhz? My cpu is a core i3 2100

According to ark.intel.com , the CPU is designed for DDR3 1066/1333
Asus says the motherboard takes 1333 and 1600, as well as 1800, 1866, 2000, 2133 and 2200 OCed.

Seeing as we don't know what caused the B slots' channel to die, I wouldn't overdo it when it comes to the A channel.
If it were my PC, I'd go for the safe option by getting the 1333 RAM and not OC-ing it at all.

Its likely the memory controller just crapped out on that side, its not likely it would happen on the other side as well. He is best off just getting some standard 1.5 volt ram, as 1.6 or 1.65 volt ram is admittedly harder on the controller. But, in terms of frequency he is probably fine as long as its 1.5 volt.

Thanks to both for your replies :D

Yeah i think i would get a single 8GB 1333Mhz stick and stay that way for while. Thanks for the help, i really appreciate it :)!

Hello again guys, so i just have a question about the ram and it's it would be ok to just get a single 1600mhz 8gb ram even if the cpu only supports until 1333mhz?

Sure. It's just going to run at 1333Mhz.
