AsRock Rack X470D4U CPU cooler + 4 DIMM compatibility

Hey all,

I got this board a while back and fitted it with a 3900x and a cheap thermalright cooler and 2x16 gigs of RAM.
The issue is I now need more RAM and because of the orientation of the socket the cooler covers up the innermost DIMM.

I need a new CPU cooler with the following requirements:

  • Fits in the socket with 4 DIMMS
  • Reasonably silent
  • Air cooler

Does anyone have a suggestion?

Check this thread:

There’s a couple people there listing the coolers they used.

What’s your preferred airflow direction? Meaning, what case do you have your mobo/cooler in and how does the cooling work in there?
Examples:

  • rackmount system: airflow front to back. Cooler required to support this airflow direction. Any other direction will reduce performance and increase noise because fans have to work harder and against the airflow created by case fans
  • Desktop/workstation: bottom to top. Obviously, here the air flows orthagonally to the previous config. The cooler mount needs to support that
  • Desktop/workstation: away from mount - yes, there are coolers with a fan that directs airflow away from the plane of the mobo/CPU mount. This obviously requires a correlated case opening allow warm air to escape the case.

If I’m seeing this correctly- its the AXP-90 series cooler, correct?
IF downdraft style cooler is planned, you’d best look at larger variants
+You do have a warmer CPU on, as-is [exs. Noctua C14, Thermalrights AXP-120X67, …]

It’s a cheap ATX 4U case with two 140mm intakes in the front, no exhaust. The PSU is mounted at the “top” of the case, i.e. close to the CPU.

I would prefer a front-to -back cooler that does not require hearing protection, but those are hard to come by.

So I am looking for a off-the-shelf desktop style cooler that can handle a 3900X and maybe a 5950X in the future.

That’s exactly the cooler, nicely spotted!
I got it to replace the stock Wraith Spire when I upgraded the old R7 1700, but you’re right it’s probably not meant for a 3900x.

Will the AXP-120 fit? According to asrock I need to get a Noctua NH-L12s. While I like Noctuas I don’t exactly enjoy paying for them

AXP120 has 6 heat pipes to work with
STD Green / LP Memory, should be a non issue, to dodge heat pipes
Either orientation, would require removing cooler, to access memory

It seems to fit fine and is reasonably priced. I’ll grab one when they are in stock

Edit: The socket on the x470d4u is a little tighter than on the pictured board + the mount is rotated 90degrees.

Edit 2: It’s the socket that’s rotated, not the mount. It should fit.

This is with a be quiet! Pure Rock Slim Tower cooler (cooling a 2700x) and 4xKingston KSM26ED8/16ME RAM

The picture I used, was just a reference grab [heatsink hovering over RAM]

That’s a cheap cooler, how are the temps?

about 62C @ 30% load

I ordered the Thermalright AXP-120 but it’s not in stock and looks like it won’t be for a month or so. I may need to buy the Noctua instead, will keep y’all posted.
