Asrock B550M Pro4 - PRO 3400GE to PRO 5750G - Post lights

Hi,
I am attempting to upgrade my home lab servers CPU and ran into an issue and I’m looking for help debugging.

Parts list:

  • Asrock B550M Pro4
  • 3400GE trying to migrate to 5750G
  • 64 GB of ECC ram (KSM26ED8/32ME from the QVL)

When I use the 3400GE the server boots and operates perfectly. I swapped in a used 5750G and the machine won’t boot, the POST lights for CPU and DRAM are on. I then removed every connected component leaving only the CPU and RAM. The same POST lights are on. I tried swapping ram positions, using a single stick, using no sticks, nothing.

The seller of the CPU is offering to help debug and replace but I wanted to ensure I checked everything as waiting for another CPU from China will take some time.

The CPU is on the QVL, same with the RAM. I used the validated BIOS for the 5750G (1.80) and it didn’t change anything. I then tried the latest BIOS, same thing.

What else can I test? Is it possible the RAM isn’t compatible with the CPU change?

Dead CPU? It was listed as unlocked, could this happen if the CPU was indeed locked?

Thanks!

There’s a very specific BIOS upgrade procedure for some ASRock boards, to get them to support Zen 3.

See here for the X570M. I haven’t checked if the B550M also requires this:

Just doing the BIOS update the normal way (e.g. through the BIOS update option in the BIOS itself), will update the BIOS, but the board will fail to boot with Ryzen 5xxx CPUs.

Updating this way takes significantly longer than the usual BIOS update process, but after doing this, my board booted fine with the newer CPUs. I too thought I had a dead CPU at first, knowing that I had already installed a BIOS version which supposedly added support for it!
