Are Gaming Chairs Actually Worth It for Long Sessions?

I’ve always thought gaming chairs were mostly about looks, flashy colors and branding not actual comfort. But after years of back pain and constantly adjusting my posture, I finally gave in and tried one of the Xstriker Gaming Chair with 5D armrests. Turns out, the difference is huge. The adjustable armrests and lumbar support help me stay comfortable through long gaming or work sessions. I can now sit for hours without the shoulder tension or lower-back fatigue I used to get.

So here’s my question:
Is the comfort improvement mostly due to ergonomics in gaming chairs or could a good ergonomic office chair do even better for the same price?

Would love to hear what setups or chairs others here use for long sessions and whether you found a better solution than the gaming chairs route.

Sitting for hours on end really shouldn’t be comfortable, but sort of like shift work it’s a thing which is often required from us depending on occupation.

I’m not a big fan of “gaming chairs” mostly because there’s such a wide range there of garbage with a gamer tag on it, or chairs that are actually good and just happen to be marketed at gamers. If what you’ve got works for you, that’s great. I’m just not really sure where to go with that in general.

As for office chairs, I’ve tried both the Aeron from Herman Miller and the Leap from Steelcase. I prefer the Aeron while I’ve heard other people who these days probably spend more time sitting than I do say they prefer the Leap. That probably comes down to their own specific build and quirks of posture which makes one chair more comfortable for them than the other.

Adjustability is important also. That might be what really sets a good chair apart from a bad one. If the overall design is decent, but you can’t tweak it to fit your specifc body, then you could end up back at square one.

Just going to reiterate what I said before:

This is older, but also still valid:

No.

With a couple of very expensive exceptions, “gaming” chairs are all show and no go.

They are the cheapest, shittiest chair the gaming brand could find all of China, but with some added racing stripes, bright “gaming” colors, and sometimes some RGB lights, and for that benefit they charge you way more than they are worth.

No one who is informed and is in their right mind would ever buy one. They are the very definition of “style over substance”, and the style here is utter trash.

There is no one on the planet who would be better off with a “gaming” chair than the equivalently priced office chair, and if you want to spend more, the office chairs will always be better too.

I’m a firm believer that the best deal in chairs is a used Herman Miller Aeron chair. Not only is it one of the best ergonomic chairs you can get your hands on, for sitting any amount of time. But they are also solid, quality products.

I got my Herman Miller Aeron chair used in 2016 for $200. It may have had a sticker with a manufacture date of 2002, but it still looked and felt brand new after 14 years of use in some nameless (now presumably bankrupt, because they were selling their office furniture) corporations offices.

Now, 9 years later it still looks and feels brand new.

The only maintenance I have had to do is as follows:

Front foam pad replaced:
There is a small foam at at the front of the chair, that supports and lifts the mesh up a little to give it better support. It was starting to dry out and crack on mine. I found a replacement for $10 on Amazon, and it took literally 5 minutes to replace it.

Adjusted height adjustment handle
This year my chair started sinking a little without me touching the handle. I thought I might need a new gas cylinder, but it turns out the set screw for the gas cylinder activation handle just needed a slight adjustment. I flipped the chair upside down, twisted the screw, and turned it right side up again. Another 5 minutes of maintenance.

At some point I probably will need a new gas cylinder, as those things don’t last forever, but they cost less than $40 on Amazon, and according to guides I have found on Youtube, installation seems pretty easy if you have some basic tools.

I guess what I am trying to say is, if you buy a gaming chair, not only will you get crappy un-ergonomic junk, but in a couple of years time it will start to look worn, and start coming apart, and you may be on the market for a new chair.

Other office chair brands are hit or miss. Some might be good, some might be cheap Chinese junk. I’ve used both over the years.

There are even some cheaper ergo-chairs online from brands like Autonomous, and while their ergonomic features seem decent, they simply don’t appear to have the same longevity of an Aeron.

Don’t get me wrong. Aeron chairs are pricy new. More than the vast majority of people are going to be willing to spend on a chair. That’s why I got mine used. The good part about that is that these things are remarkably well made, especially for our age where everything falls apart and is starting to feel like a scam.

You can buy a 20 year old Aeron Chair at significantly less than new and it will still look and feel like new. And you will probably have that chair for life. You will literally never have to buy yourself another chair.

That’s why I love mine:

“Gaming” chairs usually aren’t as comfortable and charge a premium for being “gamer” style. Generally not worth it in my opinion. This is after getting one myself.

Look for warranty too in case the pump leaks/fails.

Depends how OP defines “long”, but if it’s working-from-home long, I’d put that at months, not years.
