for work i use sketchup, and been looking into unreal engine studio for real time renderings for clients. at the same time i’ve been distro hopping trying to figure out how i can switch to linux. i’m planning on trying to figure out a looking glass setup for sketchup. i think sketchup is the only software at this point that i need that only runs on linux. if this is the case that is great because it dosent need much of a graphics card. but that is only if i can get unreal to work with linux.
Unreal has native Linux support. I’ve installed the AUR package and it runs flawlessly.
The installation is a bit daunting because compiling the C++ and shader code takes some time and requires a lot of disk space but that’s about it.
Unreal Engine works natively with Linux. Can’t imagine there would be any issues.
i assumed it would run good. really wondering about how hard it is to get it up and running for a noob. right now im struggling with distros. i don’t really like ubuntu, but with the amount of tutorials and stuff its hard to run into a wall. right now i’m liking both fedora and antergos. but i’m always running into walls. haha noob problems
Can Antergos not use the AUR? It’s based on Archlinux so I figure all you have to do is install the package I’ve linked.
yeah if it in the aur its really easy, but if its not i get stuck
Here is some documentation on building Unreal Engine.
https://wiki.unrealengine.com/Building_On_Linux
Looks like outside of AUR there are not to many easy ways to install. Trying to get it working on Fedora right now.
please let me know how it goes
The Unreal Engine repositories seam to be missing.
Not sure if it’s temporary or if they just dropped support.
They’re online for me. You just have to join the Unreal organisation on github to see the source.
Here’s a guide: https://www.unrealengine.com/en-US/ue4-on-github
And here the UE repository: https://github.com/EpicGames/UnrealEngine
So I have to link my GitHub account. Missed that step. Running into other problems now. Apparently I can’t change my Epic Games email and AOL will not verify. Deleting my old account now and starting from scratch. It’s always something.
Update:
So after getting my account sorted out I have access to the source code. Would love to test it out but I don’t want to install the Engine at this time. Was honestly just hoping for the Epic Games launcher but it seams only the Engine itself is available for Linux.
yeah i’m wondering if you can get the new studio ver.? not sure if it is a different engine. the studio ver. is more for working with cad type programs for real time rendering of projects.
I hate to recommend a youtube channel but Yaakuro has some good content on ue4 in Linux.
No I do not use the Unreal engine in Linux.
Does this mean one could play the new Unreal Tournament on Linux?
Yes, go to the unreal tournament forum, there’s a game client download. Worked well last time I played.
Link (you need to be a member) the latest build is on that page (3436913) right now.
Oh, nice! Thanks!
