I've literally never heard of these. I don't know a single person who has ever even mentioned their existence until today. Looks really cool. Not really any more expensive than a normal mousepad (depending on what you're comparing it to). I wonder how it would perform for gaming and whatnot. The only thing I could really see being an issue is it would be really hard to clean compared to a cloth mat that you can just use a damp rag, or a hard one that is super easy to clean. At first I was thinking "wow, that would be so much more durable than a cloth mat" but then I remembered all the gaming companies are starting to do fray-proof edging in some way or another. Probably glides super slow too.
With some nice leather polish a person could probably get a leather mousepad and the Teflon mouse feet into the negative coefficient range. So fast.
Plain unpolished leather wouldn't be all that great for a mousepad in general though. Real leather is usually pretty grainy and the upkeep is a bear.
I have used one and after a while of use it begins to break down and rub on the bottom of my arm. I used one and had big red irritations after a while since the bottom of my hand is rubbing against the pad.
Ya you'd probably have to re-polish it quite often though in order to maintain an even surface. Way too much upkeep.
Here's a tip:
When I was at the Library someone suggested using a sheet of paper as a mousepad. To my surprise, it worked well (in a pinch). Later I designed and tested a few patterns that made the paper mouse pad work even better. I use the 3M Precision Mousing Surface and got Joker to make a comparison video vs. the Tek Syndicate pads. TS won by a nose.
That sounds like a horrible idea. I don't know why, it just seems like the mouse would fly around though.
I've used a leather mouse pad. It was an awful experience. The mouse did not glide well at all and felt fatiguing after a short time. Using it directly on the desk was a far better experience. I used it as is out of the box though. Did not expect to need polishing.
Have you ever sat on a leather couch in shorts? Because that what i think will happen when gaming.
I never tried a leather mouse pad but hey what about using a processed cheese slice?
Thats going to soak up so much sweat. Yuck
I tried it out for you with a small piece of leather.
I observed two major disadvantages:
- The friction is too high, the mouse requires more force to be slid.
- The effective resolution of the sensor is decreased, probably because of the texture of the leather. -> The mouse cursor then moves more slowly (about 10 times)
I'm comparing this to a wooden desk with glossy finish, not another mousepad. Using a leather mousepad is a horrible idea.
