My current home server is a Wintel box, and I use MS Remote Desktop to manage it from my Mac Air.
Due to some recent events incl W11, I plan to transition this to Linux at some point, but to make the learning curve & transition easier, I’d like to go with a GUI & a remote desktop as well, as I have never used Linux in earnest.
imo MS RDP is the most convenient and performant protocol to manage Linux via GUI remotely.
You can do this via the xrdp package, you may also want to avoid a distro that has chosen to participate in the long march toward wayland if you want things to not be broken though.
Gnomes Remote Desktop Server works pretty good if you want to continue using RDP.
I used Rustdesk for my dad’s computer. Note, Wayland RDP requires another person to grant screen share permission.

Thanks for the help. I’ll have a look at them.
I use KRDC for remote desktop on Linux. I gave 3-4 different programs a try and KRDC was the only one I found without issues. I know I tried the built in one with gnome which I use for my desktop environment. Dont remember the names of the others off the top of my head but I just searched around the package manager’s GUI for RDP programs so Im sure they were the standard ones you will find around. The others I tried had issues ranging from not working at all with just a black screen to being laggy to simply having the image seem very low resolution or bitrate. KRDC was the only one that functions without issue for me. I was looking at giving Rustdesk a try but needing to run my own management server for it put me off. I just wanted a completely basic RDP program like the Remote Desktop you get on Windows.
Based on your DE you may have Gnome Remote Desktop or KRDC, Remmina is always a good option too.
I personally use KRDC to access my Windows VM and never had any issues with it
https://www.helpwire.app/ has a Linux version and setup is pretty simple. I haven’t pushed it hard but it’s worked fine for me for basic remote support.
I second Remmina. It’s what I use to connect to a windows 10 box from linux mint. Never had an issue with connecting to the windows 10 machine outside of me fat finguring the ip address or forgetting to set the check box to use the display settings from the win 10 box on connection!
Yes I know I need to migrate the win 10 box to a new os! Just been to lazy to do it!
