Anime: Sub Vs. Dub?

Which do you prefer for animes, subbed, or dubbed?

This question is more of a generalisation; say you are going to watch a new anime, there are both sub and dubbed available and no reviews of either can be found. Which of the two would you defualt to?

I personally would instantly watch the sub, the voice acting in general for subbed anime's is of a higher quality

Subbed otherwise you get http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EtzlKJ1dObU

Sometimes dubbed is good, most of the time it sucks though

...So prefer subbed

depends on the anime

The main reason I watched cartoons while they were undubbed (and unsubbed) was for learning english, and it helped heaps.

I never watch dubbed. There are 3.5 titles where dub fits with the rest, for example Cowboy Bebop, but in all other cases it sounds horrible regardless of quality. English voice actors just can't sound appropriate there.

Taking Japanese things out of anime makes is kinda pointless.

Same here. I got tons of vocabulary by watching subbed anime. It helped a lot because language in anime transtations is simpler than in movies and series.

Read the question; this is regardless of anime, as a generalisation.

Subbed, Because it is Far superior. The anime is orginally made with those voices because they specifically fit the character. The Writer and creator found that voice so that it was correct. If you find a different voice it is wrong. The only anime EVER to be good dubbed was DBZ because the Japanese goku was HORRID.

I usually would try dubbed first. In all honest, dubbed anime isn't bad. Think of some of the most popular animes ever; Cowboy Bebop, Fullmetal Alchimist, DBZ... Did they have bad dubs? What about animes like Steins;Gate or Hetalia, where the dub atcually makes it BETTER than the original. When I look back at all the anime I really enjoyed, they are mostly dubbed. Hellsing, Baccano!, Samuri Champloo, Berserk, they all had really decent voice actors. Sure, maybe Naruto or Bleach dub is shit, but look at what those animes have become.

The titles you listed don't depend on language and voice acting much. And no, dubs of FMA and S;G can't possibly be better than the original.

The point is, there is a very small minority of titles where english dub doesn't sound wrong. In all other cases it's painful to hear even if it's done well.

You do realize you just contradicted yourself by stating "The titles you listed don't depend on language and voice acting much." then saying "dubs of FMA and S;G can't possibly be better than the original."

Tell you what, I'll give you the benefit of the doubt by assuming you have not watched Steins;Gate in Japanese then English. Let me help, tell me that this... is better than this

No contradictions here. It just sounds less wrong in titles that don't have a lot of things unique to the Japanese culture. Any dub still sounds wrong to me probably because I watched around 500 titles with subs.

That's like... so important.

i generally watch dubbed if i can, usually the dub is decent and i'd rather not spend so much time reading, and possibly missing out on the story

though when i was watching ahead in bleach (quite awhile ago) i was learning quite abit of japanese

Is it that dub?

Well, Okabe is not horrible. But Mayuri... Oh god my ears. Please no.

not spend so much time reading, and possibly missing out on the story

When you are used to reading subtitles you don't notice them at all.

I prefer dub, because I end up focusing more on the text than what's going on in the anime.

If you have watched the series, you would know that the MC laughs like that CONSTANTLY, and it is the major complaint I hear that deters people away from subbed version. It is important.. because ITS BAD VOICE ACTING. This is what I was talking about originally.

It's fine if you have your preference and cannot explain it. Some things are subjective like that. But don't come and tell me dub sounds awful then dismiss the anime I've listed with good English dub as being "Not Japanese enough"

Bad voice acting it bad voice acting. It can show up in Japanese or English. It doesn't matter what the content of the story is, it can still have horrible English or Japanese voice actors.

And Okabe is the MC while Mayuri.... Well, I'll let you see for yourself

It doesn't matter who is the main charater. If one major character is horribly voiced, the dub is unwatchable.

And I don't know any dub that has young female characters voiced not horribly.
