AMD GPU Passthrough for Hackintosh VM

I have been looking into adding a single slot AMD GPU to my workstation in order to run a MacOS virtual machine under Fedora 39. I am considering either the WX7100 or W6600, as these are the two single slot cards supported by current versions of MacOS.

I already have the VM up and running with MacOS 13 using this script, and my IOMMU groups look good, so all that’s left is to choose a card and get it passed through according to this guide. My first thought is that an older Ellesmere or RX480 based card like the WX7100 may be more stable for this use case, however I would love to hear input from the community.

My system is an HP Z6 G4 Workstation:

  • 2x Xeon 6268CL
  • 2TB Optane DCPMM + 512GB DDR4 2666 RDIMM
  • NVIDIA RTX A5000

I have seen some references to older AMD cards having issues with >1TB memory capacity, and I am wondering if either card would be effected. I’m hoping an AMD expert on this forum can guide me through the PCIe reset bug considerations of Ellesmere vs. Navi as well.

Any input is appreciated, thanks! :grin

Polaris has a higher likelihood of being supported OOTB or with minimal WhateverGreen tweaks. IIRC the 6600 requires WhateverGreen and a bunch of other Kexts.

W6600 worked well for me, I just had to copy the BIOS off the card and then specify it in the VM configuration.

Thanks, I saw some guides that said the Navi 23 chipset was supported OOTB on MacOS 12+ so this is what I hoped to hear.
