So I'm looking into building a lighting system to splash the average colors on my monitor onto the wall behind it (for the whole immersion thing) and a majority of the research I'm finding is telling me to go with coding an arduino to control an RGB strip along with taking samples to average to get these colors. 

I'm aware that there are kits pre-made that do this but I'd prefer to build to try and DIY.

Anyone have experience with this/know where I should start looking?

I dont actually own one, but planning to get it.. have a look into lightpack (recently funded on kickstarter) seems to do what your looking for. http://lightpack.tv/

I saw that but was looking into building it on my own. I'd like the experience. Worst case scenario I pick up a light pack after much frustration with arduinos
