Amazon AWS Free! tier

Hey I recently discovered that Amazon offers free VPS service and stuff for up to a year, so I signed up. Currently I have a single instance with 1 virtualized core running Ubuntu. It isn't doing anything useful right now, but I can SSH into it and install stuff

I've been wanting to try this as well recently.

If I remember correctly though don't you still need to give your credit card info even for the free tier?

Allow me to preface with ihavenoideawhatimdoing.jpg
This is interesting to me, as I've been looking for a way to move my IRC bouncer off my desktop (currently running in a virtual machine, as I have no other working hardware to run it on). Is this service something I could use for that purpose?
Also, yes, it looks like you need to give them payment information so they can charge in event you go over the various limits of the free tier.

Yeah you have to give credit card number, but not the three digits on the back, and they always warn you when you're doing something that may incurr charges (with one of those "are you sure" dialog boxes that gives you an estimation of charges) So I think there's little risk of accidentally costing money.

I have seen guides on how to set up an IRC server using amazon AWS. I'm trying to set up my own VPN server (so I can have a free vpn! ) but I'm doing it only tiny bits at a time because I have to work it in between school and stuff

From what I understand AWS is, yes you could run an IRC bouncer. Just about any VPS can run it :)

Personally I've used MaxVPS for all my Virtual Machine needs, but will definitely be looking into AWS.

It looks like after the year, if you pay up front the EC2 server that is the cheapest is around 2$ a month, which I'm kinda ok with paying, especially if it ends up being useful
