Acer laptop won't charge continuously

I use a laptop for work when on the move and at Uni but recently it has stopped charging randomly, I can turn it on and it charges briefly for around 15 seconds then cuts out.

Laptop specs:

Acer Aspire 5741

Intel i3 330m

Onboard Intel hd graphics

3gb RAM

128gb Samsung 830 SSD

Windows 7 home premium 64-bit

I cannot get anymore specs because the laptop battery is now completely dead for the same reason I cannot look for logs or check the power settings however they are normally left on either the default high performance setting or the balanced power setting.

Troubleshooting I have done:

Testing the ac adapter with a multimeter-

It displays the correct operating voltage and does not cut out unlike when plugged into the laptop.

Unplugging the battery and then powering on the laptop through mains power-

When doing this the laptop turns on but fails to even post as the power cuts out even quicker.

Open the laptop and check all connections etc for any visual problems:

There are no obviously visual problems with the laptop motherboard or the surrounding areas, I have also reset the bios/cmos to check I have not messed than up.

Does anyone here or logan etc have any idea how to fix this?

yeah, thats what i think too. Try borrow a friends adapter or something to check, otherwise you should be able to find a cheap replacement one online somewhere
