A themed "mixtape" challenge (10-song limit)

Hey everyone,

I want to propose an idea for a thread where we each share a themed set of music. Think of it kind of like how mixtapes used to be, or how playlists are today, but with some specific limitations and restrictions.

The core idea is that anyone can create a list of any music, so long as there is a central theme. The theme can be a specific genre, a mood, an emotion, or an elicited response. For example, you could do themes like “Jazz Dreams,” “A Wasted Youth,” “Dancing All Night,” or “Favorites of Year XXXX.”

However, to make this work, I want to introduce a few limitations:

  • 10 songs or less: It’s too easy to just dump a bunch of our favorite tracks into a giant playlist. That quickly becomes a music overload and a massive time sink for anyone else trying to listen.

  • Keep it under an hour: The list should be listenable inside of an hour or so.

  • Restriction breeds creativity: Limiting the list to 10 songs forces you to really think about what actually makes the cut. The goal is to think about what we listen to, and what we would want to share if we could only share “some” music. The list can be made of songs we think are good, or music we just find interesting.

You are welcome to include a link to a playlist, but I’d ask that each post includes a text list/table of all the songs, including the artist and preferably the song version or album. This way, readers can easily seek out the music on their own preferred streaming platform or physical media.

Hopefully, this will lead to some great music discovery for both the person sharing and the users reading.

If you want to join in, just copy the template below, paste it into a reply, and fill it out!

To kick things off, I’ll start.

Follow Up Acts of Grunge

I’m going for a set that features songs from artists that were part of the Big 4 Seattle area Grunge Bands - Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, and Soundgarden. I tried to include a broad list of bands, but Chris Cornell’s solo work snuck in there twice because, reasons.

Some of this I had not listened to before, so this was fun!

1 Mad Season River of Deceit Above Technically still grunge, but it’s another chance to hear Layne Staley. Also features Mike McCready from Pearl Jam, Barrett Martin from Screaming Trees, and John Baker Saunders - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fm72DPJCX58
2 Chris Cornell Can’t Change Me Euphoria Morning Chris’ (Soundgarden) first solo studio album - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XaxI41Oqdfw

6 Stone Gossard Remain Moonlander I’m not a huge fan of Stone’s (Pearl Jam) solo album, but I do like this song. - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SrntYvUXozg
7 Sweet 75 Red Dress Self - Titled Krist Novoselic’s first album post Nirvana - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gXGkBj2KD9U
8 Matt Cameron Time Can’t Wait Cavedweller Solo album by Matt Cameron. - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n9HeY3f4_mw
9 Late! Friend of a Friend Pocketwatch A solo cassette album by Dave Grohl - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HwtO6KGT33o
10 Chris Cornell Billie Jean Unplugged in Sweden [or Chris Cornell (Deluxe Edition)] Unplugged version was never officially released but easy enough to find online. Chris has a ton of amazing songs post Soundgarden, but this one sticks with me because it’s so different from Michael Jackson’s original. - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B8yAZd7Ng8A

Optional Playlist Link: I decided to go with YouTube links. Apologies if they don’t work in all areas.

Very nice, but if you include Chris Cornel SOLO then you should have included Soundgarden with Black Hole Sun

I would also include Queensryche and Silent Lucidity on a mix.

So I take it my C64 SID Mix would not count as it is all instrumental :stuck_out_tongue:

Sure, I’ll bite.

Theme: Post-Punk of the 1980’s that wasn’t all Goth or New Wave

I think the title says it all. I feel like there is a whole category if slightly edgy 80’s post-punk music that is mostly forgotten. We are talking things at the border of New Wave and Goth, yet somehow distinctly different People remember the New Wave and the over the top goth rock bands like Sisters of Mercy, and Bauhaus and Joy Division, but the more subtle straight straight up post punk is often forgotten.

Some of these bands may be better remembered by the general public more for other styles of music from other songs they released.

Not “Punk”. Not really “Goth” or “Goth Rock”. Not really “New Wave”. But close to all three. And mostly all very danceable.

Most of these bands are going to be British.

# Artist Song Title Album Notes
1 Modern English Someone’s Calling After the Snow (1982) Everyone knows “I Melt with You” but this song is great and to me typifies the mood of this genre. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5pdoOF7537A
2 The Bolshoi A Way Friends (1986) Sometimes called “Away”. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4FzFu-ze8pA
3 Gene Loves Jezebel Desire Discover (1986) This might be a little uncomfortably glam-goth adjacent for this genre, but I think it still tracks. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kbObT0sXJZE

10 The Church Under the Milky Way Starfish (1988) The stereotypical last song of the night. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pWxJEIz7sSA

@JackTL is right. Keeping it to just 10 is difficult. Much was left on the cutting room floor.

Edit: I think I mostly fixed the formatting apart from an empty table remnant I can’t seem to remove.

That’s the only thing I don’t like about Level1Techs, that they went with this god awful forum software instead of Xenforo or phpBB

Great song, but my list was looking at other music by members of the big 4 grunge bands, so no Soundgarden songs could be on the list

Edit: Also, instrumental lists would be great

Love it. I’m gonna check these out as soon as I can

Theme: Covers

A selection of cover songs. Some made the original famous, some to me represent the best performance of the famous original. Since there are way more covers than originals I assume that many people may have differing opinions for which songs to pick here.
And, yes, I think there is a reason why Bob Dylan received a Nobel price in literature.

I really debated Master’s of War in my head for a bit for my list. I’m glad I didn’t add it now.
