A good 250$ GPU?

I'm looking for a GPU that will kick ass at 1080p gaming, I'm getting this gpu for my brother since he's been running on a apu. He plays way more game than I do and I feel bad seeing him sit there playing at 720p and droping frames a bit. Im willing to go a little over 250$ and also it'd be nice if I could get it cheaper. I will be ordering the card tomorrow ( he said he'd also pref Nvidia when I asked)

Thank you

The Nvidia GPU that comes to mind is the GTX 760: http://pcpartpicker.com/parts/video-card/#c=142

If your willing to deal with mail-in rebates and go a little over budget, this would work well: http://pcpartpicker.com/part/asus-video-card-gtx770dc2oc2gd5

Also consider and R7 AMD GPU, they are much cheaper and will run in crossfire with the APU.

I'd say wait for GTX 960 benchmarks, then make your decision. :) the 960's supposed to retail around $250, (or less, say some rumors) however if it's anything like the 970 it may be sold out for the first month or so. I had to wait about a month for my 970, though I don't regret it. good luck!

Well for Forget any nVidia GPU at that price. Tell him to stop being a fanboy unless he really really wants to spend more money for less performance. Seeing that he has no GPU at all he doesn't really have much experience so tell him to stop it.

Here. R9 290. That will stomp any nVidia card except the 970. Even then the 970 is only a little faster and they are the same at 1440p. That card will completely wreck a 760 and a 770. It isn't even close.

Powell_Thom is right. You should wait for the GTX 960. Although the price is even better since 2 hours(200$CA)! If you want a good gpu for 250$, get the r9 285/GTX 760/r9 280x. These GPUs are exceptionally good for the price at 1080p, can perform at 60fps in max settings in most games(excluding Metro Last Light, Crysis 3 and badly optimized AU(Assasin's Creed Unity) Though, if you want more than 2x MSAA, get a higher res monitor, since have more pixels is better than having pixel filters.

Overall, IF your power supply can handle, because having an APU means 95W, get an r9 280x or an r9 290, because for the price, it is the best. Though, if you can wait for the GTX 960 , your patience will be rewarded.

Note that I'm going to buy the GTX 960 on the first day because I've been waiting for several months now!

It depends on what APU he's using. If it's a quad core (higher spec) APU then the GTX 760 is rock solid at 1080p high/ultra settings and bounces between 200USD and 250USD. If it's a dual core (mid to low spec) APU, then the horsepower the 760 has to offer is going to waste thanks to dat CPU bottleneck. Perhaps a GTX 750Ti (~130USD) or R7 260X 2GB (~140USD) card would be better suited.

how about a 290?

Wait a bit till the 960 comes out, then you can get maxwell

The r9 290 is the only gpu with consisting for  $250 unless the power supply can't handle it.

II wouldn'want for a 960 either, rumors are pointing to it being barely faster than a 770. The 960ti, on the other hand will be somewhat decent if it launches at $250 but it all be easier than a 290.

R9 285? anyone else see that as a good option or just me?

With 2gb of memory I don't think it's a good option.  The r9 280 I would consider a better option but it's also cheaper than $250 by quite a bit. It wouldn't utilize the whole budget, which isn't the end of the world but if an r9 290 can be purchased, why not?

or wait for the 960

his friend is playing at 1080P...i think 2GB of VRAM will be enough for 1080P. also the R9 290 is not less than $250. sure op says he is willing to spend a little extra but really, first lets see if we can find a good candidate that isnt over the budget

Oh guys, I forgot to tell you that my father works as an Nvidia GPU engineer , so he has access to some classified info(don't worry I'm not lying about this). Since it's classified, he can't say too much info to me, but he said three things that he was completely sure about: sometimes the power consumption of the GTX 960 go to 95 W to 110W, the GTX 960 has better performance than the Kepler-based variants GTX 760 AND 770, unless the drivers arent up to date, or the current drivers arent optimized for the GTX 960 and the price is going around 200$,but my dad does not know the exact price and Nvidia may make a move.

That's all he said to me. I wanted to see the benchmarks, but he didnt let me for two reasons: I dont have the right to see it(him and the company dont want to) and what kind of fuss it would create to let this info loose on the web to him. That's all I have to say.

if this is true, that the 960 will be out. then OP should buy a 760 from EVGA, and when the 960 launches(long as its within the next 90 days), OP can utilize EVGA's Step Up program and not pay very much to go from teh 760 to a 960. i did this to go from a 760 to a 970.

Holy shit we got a leak about the gtx 960 (i think). for the gpu just go with the r9 290 just like what everyone else recommends

AMD is more cost effective for GPUs for the most part. If you are going to wait AMD is also coming out with new GPUs soon that look to be much more powerful. The 380x has 4000+ stream processors from the last article I saw.
