Do you have any recommended certs besides your standard A+? I heard you guys mention cisco stuff, but is it worth it to spend time and money getting A+, Net+ and what not, thanks.
And I've also heard of a typing cert, Which a lot of city jobs seem to require. Although I don't know about those costs.
It might be worth it to make a video about all the different certs and what they're good for, though there's probably one out there.
To be honest, I've learned a lot just fiddling with things at home, but I bet the certs look nice on your resume. Don't take my word for it though haha I'm just a kid so I don't know much about the business world
I'm a System Architect and Engineer. I have never had any certs (just a bachelor degree). But, I do go over all of the resumes for my company when it comes to tech hires. I will say that certs are great to have on a resume, especially when you can say you have kept them current for any period of time. But the number one thing I look at is, "what has this person actually done or worked with?" If you are just getting into the tech field and you want to be taken seriously, I would say get out there and get some certs. Or, get any kind of paper that says you have put in work to educate yourself about what you want to work in: i.e. degrees of any kind.
Just like the_duke said. A book costs $30-60 depending on what you choose and the rest is the time and effort you want to put into it. There are also the countless YouTube channels (EveryManIT has anything you can think of) online for visual/hands-on learners like myself that have a hard time staring at a book for hours on end. You will learn a lot from that book and will be able to apply it and fix real life situations, mostly troubleshooting. Like duke said, they look for experience and it would be hard to get in a desktop position without knowing the in's and out's of PC', printers, cables, etc. A+ is just the nuts&bolts knowledge of it, once you land a desktop or whatever job you are looking for is when you will really start learning.
I thought I would chime in since my boss mentioned that to me at lunch one day when talking about a new hire. "I would take anyone that has previous *fill in the blank* experience over anyone with a bunch of certs."
