9950X3D and Tomahawk X870E with DDR56000 restart hang-ups (sometimes)

9950X3D with the X870e Tomahawk and Gskill Tridentz NEO DDR5 2x16gb CL 30-38-38-96 sometimes hangs on restarts and won’t boot then it throws a yellow error (forgot the code it threw) but it’s RAM-related, cleared CMOS MEMx86 tested the sticks and got a green pass.

People seem to have issues with the MSI doing random restart hang-ups on these boards in DDR5. Maybe someone has some insight, Thanks

Although not a direct match, but I have built a 9900x with MSI’s X870(not -e) Tomahawk. All seems to be in order. But I do believe I had one “hikkup” on a boot, for which I ended up using reset.

Disable expo profile and retest. Expo is not guaranteed to work, or there might be issues with early agesa for 9000 series.

There are no easy ways out of memory training failure, your mobo+mem kit might be marginal.

Throw in long memtest for both EXPO and non-EXPO for good measure.

If issues persist even in baseline JEDEC, then its time to isolate whether memory kit or cpu is faulty (barring user error during physiscal installation). Then rma faulty part.

Thanks; I will do that! I just disabled the Memory test restore; it was set to Auto. I read that it could cause issues. The problem is that it doesn’t hang all the time; it’s very random. I could restart the PC 20 times, and it boots normally.

Did you disable expo already? Memory context restore only exacerbates existing memory training issues, its not the primary cause of it.

If your memory kit@expo profile is unstable, then it likely remain unstable unless you stard overclocking memory manually.

If you memory kit@baseline (expo off, 4800 MHZ profile) is still unstable, then its rma time for it or cpu.

If cpu runs ok with another kit@baseline, then original memory is likely shit. Double check with memtest.
